Connery had looks, charm, style, wit, and personality. he was the perfect James Bond.
Craig doesn't have any of the attributes of Connery. sure, he's in great physical shape, but lacking in looks, charm, ect.
I think Craig is a decent actor. Layer Cake was a good film, and he made a perfect lead for that film, but there is nothing in that film that suggested that he would be a good James Bond. I can see Craig playing in some roles along the lines of what Russell Crowe has done, but if the next few Bond films are anything like Casino Royale, I can see diminishing returns. the Idea that Bond is supposed to develop from what Craig has done, into a Connery type Bond, is more far fetched than invisible cars and rocket packs.
