Part of what work out for Connery was being set so close to the time it was written for. Setting Pierce or Dalton back in the fiftys could have been brilliant. They almost did it when the set goldeneye what was it 7 years before, back in the cold war. There's not much to change about how he played bond, as limited as they let him. Perhaps the fiftys would have given pierce more room to work with forget about all of the pc crap that was coming up in the 90's. Although I have to say I loved the gadget and production values brought to movie is his time.
Like when they first brought him out, accept no substitute.
