New Views On Old Bond Movies

Post by Dr. No »

Might need a better title. Watched the 1960s Bonds with my Dad during the holidays sometime my kids joined us, (it was great having generations sharing a tradition  ) their views on some of the stories made me wonder about how our opinions of what is happening changes.

Dr. No Bond causing the reactor to go critical upset them probably because of Japan. I never took the reactor too seriously it was like big steam ensigns in the story, my Dad who saw it at the movies when it was new said it was standard misunderstood nuclear age and Space Race techno jargon, so he never took it seriously either, my kids see it and think about the toxic ramifications

From Russia With Love my oldest wanted to know how many mission Bond has a bad guy protecting him, he remembers some of Twine I guess.

I have a few more but we'll see if anyone wants to join in.

I've always wondered how the way Blofeld's rocket landed in the crater in YOLT was perceived by audiences in the 60s, since it was so blatantly unrealistic.

The whole film was over the top of course, but that part was just impossible.

Maybe audiences in the 60s didn't know it was impossible.

I like the film as well, but it is a bit silly in parts.

They might have, given the huge interest in space race. Still, that doesn't stop movies from defying the laws of physics, as STAR TREK is the latest example.

Internet jargon and uses is today's worst offender. Most computer screens shown in movies including Bond are Fakeintosh.

Bond introduction to the Internet age wasn't bad, but when they babble out the modem and computer specs in GE it is hilarious

Yes but isn't STAR TREK science fiction, while Bond should at least be plausible?

But nevermind YOLT is an entertaining Bond movie made at the height of 60s space race.

I think this is it and the people working on Bond were not rocket scientists so made the rocket look the way they thought the audience would expect it to.
The gadgets were almost always real or realistic enough to fool the CIA. The rest is sort of movie magic like submarine cars and lasers cutting cars in half.

One other thing I noticed is in the first few original Bond movies they didn't have the sound down yet quite a few times it for example in Dr No it sounded like perry mason should be pulling up in his new Thunderbird.

I guess it was one of those things they developed as they went.
