British Actors in News: Connery Snubs Bond, Cavill New Superman

British actors at different ends of their careers were in the news this weekend: veteran star Sir Sean Connery and young actor Henry Cavill.
British actors Sir Sean Connery and Henry Cavill, a couple of generations apart, each found their way into the news on Jan. 30 2011. Bond is the 70-year-old knighted actor, Cavill is a 27-year-old who most recently starred in the highly popular Showtime series The Tudors.
Connery, the very first James Bond, starred as the British super agent, 007, in seven critically acclaimed films, all box-offices successes, has been reported by the U.K.s 'News of the World' to have declined an invitation to take part in the 50th anniversary of the Bond movie franchises. Meanwhile it was announced Cavill had landed the coveted role of Superman in Superman: Man of Steel.
James Bond and Sir Sean Connery
There is no concrete quote from Connery regarding his declining the opportunity. 'News of the World' has reported that MGM is continuing the series, which began in 1962, next year with Daniel Craig's third appearance as Bond in an as yet untitled film. Their intention is to mark the 50 years with an event in which every actor who has played James Bond will attend and talk about their experiences with the character.
In addition to Sir Sean, who was knighted in 2000, Pierce Brosnan, Timothy Dalton, George Lazenby and Roger Moore have played Bond. Connery, Dalton and Moore are English, Brosnan Irish and Lazenby is Australian. Taking into account inflation the series is considered the highest grossing film series of all-time; there has been 22 official Bond films made.
Connery has had success in many other movies including The Man Who Would be King, The Hunt for Red October and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for 1988s The Untouchables. The 'News of the World' gave no reason for Connery's having turned down the opportunity.
Cavill Career on the Rise
Cavill has had starring film roles previous, notably in The Count of Monte Cristo and Stardust. Superman: Man of Steel has a planned release in 2012 and will be directed by Zack Snyder. The late Christopher Reeve starred as the man of steel in the first Superman film in 1978 and Brandon Routh played him in the 2006 film, Superman Returns.

In a press release Synder said that Cavill was "the perfect choice to don the cape and shield" while deadline.com, a site devoted to film news, reported that a Warner Bros. executive told them that the British actor has "an amazing quality. He doesn't look too much like Reeve and Routh but he's big and strong and he has a very modern feel to him.
"We're really going to try and make Superman as contemporary as possible."

Wow. Things must be BAD if Connery even refuses to show up for a celebration?

Re: Connery Snubs Bond
I think Connery has always snubbed Bond celebrations over the past 20 years. There is some bitter resentment there.Ale wrote:Wow. Things must be BAD if Connery even refuses to show up for a celebration?
He never showed up at Cubby's memorial, which tells you something.

I imagine Pierce will be torn between being a class act (which he is) and snubbing them (which they deserve).
Why make an anniversary special when 40 years of history were jettisoned so abruptly in 2005?
