Danny Dyer will star in a film version of The Sweeney
Monday, 22 November 2010
Danny Dyer has beaten James Bond star Daniel Craig to the the lead role in the big screen adaptation of The Sweeney.
007 hunk Daniel was tipped to play DS George Carter in the film version of the cult 70s cop show, but cockney bad boy Danny has landed the part originally played by Dennis Waterman, The Sun reports.
Human Traffic star Danny will star opposite Ray Winstone as DI Jack Regan, the part made famous by John Thaw.
Danny and Ray played father and son in football film All In The Game in 2006 and Danny is a big admirer of Ray's work.
The film is being directed by Danny's friend and long-time collaborate Nick Love, who has worked with him on The Football Factory, The Business and The Firm.

It may come as a shock to hear me say this, but I actually think that Craig would have been better in the role. Oh well.

two thoughts occur to me maybe Craig was too busy to fit this in and maybe they didn't want a repeat of teh horror movie where Craig is too busy to re-shoot it so it was postponed

I quite like Danny Dyer so I think this will be ok. John Thaw is a legend but Regan has been often imitated (Gene Hunt!) so Winstone will do a good job. It's a bit hard to imagine anyone other than Dennis Waterman as George Carter (or as Terry McCann).

This film has disaster written all over it.
Winstone is too old to play Regan (Thaw was actually in his 30's when he played the character), and Dyer as Carter - hell no!
I actually think Craig would have been a better choice as Carter. As for Nick Love directing.......

If you don't like Nick Love or Danny Dyer then this will be awful!! I suppose it would be more fun if it was just a cobs and robbers film starring Winstone and Dyer and directed by Nick Love. The Sweeney wrote:This film has disaster written all over it.

I don't think this movies is going to be going anywhere with Craig or without Craig with or without Will Smith for that matter.

It is going to bomb even if it gets a all star cast or bullet proof lead actor.
