While he didn't express it outright, Smith's social media withdrawal is widely believed to have been a result of the backlash he faced after winning the Oscar for best original song, particularly for his acceptance speech when he incorrectly quoted Ian McKellen in suggesting he was the first openly gay man to win an Academy Award.

The news no doubt came as a shock to fellow openly gay Oscar winners Stephen Sondheim, Elton John and Dustin Lance Black. Black, who won the best original screenplay honor in 2008 for Milk and delivered an impassioned speech addressing struggling LGBTQ youth, actually fired Smith a seemingly damning tweet in response.

I watched the new ghost busters trailer after hearing it praised on the radio. Yeah not that great looks like a standard Sony reboot , a few funny lines, the gadgets chick and black lady seemed cool but the rest of it look so far beneath the original it's sad.

Talking about that incredibly stupid idea of another remake of TC-this time with Michael B Jordan...now I actually remembered who that guy is. This is just another idiot "we need to prove we are not racists" thing to the point where those people who have no balls to deal with overly political correctness in the USA think it's a smart idea to change one character's ethinicity to prove that point. Khm,excuse me,but who again is the president of the States? Well then WHY DO WE NEED TO BRING ALL THIS HALF-A$$ED RACISM THAT REALLY ISN'T THERE INTO DISCUSSION?!

They are failing miserably in Hollywood V with this concept. The producers just don't get it. Jordan bombed in F4 too as the human torch.

I was at few of the Walmart and Targets yesterday and today, and Creed almost sold out fast ever since its home video release last Tuesday. Spectre, on the hand, is still on the shelf.

Reboots, remakes, and gender/ethnicity swapping are the big trends in Hollywood these days, and the Ghostbusters series is yet another victim of this. Now I'm not a Ghostbusters fanatic, but after seeing the new film trailer today, I can understand why many are furious about it. The gender swapping of the Ghostbusters characters is obviously the biggest cause of controversy. First, the actresses are not the best choices of casting. Second, they should be established as the new team that's being trained by the original Ghostbusters team or something, instead of just being female versions of the original characters. But the script, execution of humour, and effects are also being criticized. Some have said it looks similar to the live action Scooby-Doo films, and I have to agree.

And all of this is once again brought to you by Sony. For me, Sony is to the film industry what LJN once was to the gaming industry. They get the licensing rights to popular films, and then produce total crap with them.

I had forgotten about LJN.

I think the radio station that raved about the trailer was getting money from Sony. They still pay people to play their music so I guess promoting a movie is not too much more at ask.

In my daily internet travels most hate the trailer. It's like being excited for that Pixel movie last year. Ghostbusters reboot looks like it should be on syfy not a big budget movie.

This Ghostbusters remake has me concerned also, it is indicative of where Hollywood has been going in the recent past and where it will be going for the foreseeable future. Now I don't have an aversions to remakes as a rule, after all one of my all time favorite films is the Maltese Falcon which is itself the fourth incarnation of that story all within a decade. However unlike the first 3 forgettable incarnations of the Maltese Falcon the Ghostbusters was right the first time. To remake a film you must be bringing something new to the table and improving on the previous telling. Remakes are for crappy movies that need improvement not cinematic classics that got it right the first time! What does this version have that was missing from the first? Melissa McCarthy and a bunch of Saturday Night Live has beens. used to was, and never weres? Oh I get it because their gals! How avaunt guard! Yawn, who cares! If you want to remake a film, pick one of the metric ton of films that have been long forgotten on the dust pile of history. Not classics that have established themselves over time. That goes double for the Bullitt remake that has been bandied about L.A. the last 5 years.

The thing is remakes in most cases (like 98%) aren't nearly as good as originals.Just look at that remake of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner with Ashton Kutcher. IMO TC is one of the rare cases where remake is actually better than original. What's the point of another remake? I guess the point is to cast a black actor and be bloody politically correct. Just look at that Oscar nonsense this year. Changing character's ethnicity is not the way to prove anti-racism. Plus Michael B. Jordan? Thomas Crown was played by Steve McQueen and Pierce Brosnan and now Thomas Crown is supposed to be a guy who played in a comedy with Zac Efron(which wasn't a good comedy)? GET REAL SONY!! :cuss:

The Fly and Little Shop Of Horrors, which both came out in 1986, are a couple of examples of good remakes that come to mind. The 1986 version of Little Shop Of Horrors is one of my favourite films. But yes, in most cases remakes are usually not as good as the originals. With Thomas Crown, the 1999 remake was fine, and I don't see how casting a black actor is going to make any significant improvements. They should create something original for black actors/actresses, so that they can have their own iconic characters rather than just being the black version of popular white characters.

As Benny mentioned above, I too am concerned about this current trend, especially when it comes to the Bond series. I constantly hear talk about how Bond should be black, gay, female, etc. The way things are going now, we may very well see a drastic change to Bond that's even worse than with Craig.

Like I said many times, Bond has been dead for more than 10 years so he can be anyone or anything. Leave all the escapism to M:Is and Kingmans.

FBF, IF Broccoli ever gets bought out and relinquishes her throne at Eon, who would YOU prefer as YOUR #1 choice as the 7th 007?

I definitely agree with what you said about creating new characters for black actors. Let them have their own characters instead of being copies of other characters. But,seems to me,noone actually thought of that and now they are changing ethnicities of characters so they wouldn't be called racists. The world has gone mad. I,in no way,am racist but Bond SHOULDN'T be black,Thomas Crown SHOULDN'T be black and any other white character shouldn't be changed into black in order to please political correctness in America.

Poldark’s Aidan Turner is ‘preparing to steal Bond out from under Tom Hardy’

Poldark’s Aidan Turner is battling it out with Tom Hardy to be the next incarnation of James Bond.

Image

It looks like the handsome Irishman has every chance of stealing the role out from under Tom – as BoyleSports have slashed his odds of getting it from 6/1 to 4/1, the same odds as his rival.

It’s a major upset as Tom, 38, has been the bookies’ favourite for the past few weeks, ever since current Bond Daniel Craig expressed his lack of desire to continue with the franchise.

Image

Aidan, 32, has legions of female fans and impressed in his role as a Bond-style mercenary in the BBC’s And Then There Were None over Christmas.

Spokesperson for BoyleSports Liam Glynn said: ‘We have seen a massive interest in Hobbit actor, Aidan Turner to become the next James Bond and following some hefty bets in our Dublin City centre shops on Saturday morning including a €300 bet at 6/1 our traders have cut the price of the Dublin born actor becoming James Bond into 4/1.’

At this stage I think I prefer Turner to Hiddleston or Hardy. As a side note, I read on a forum recently a poster claiming Michael Fassbender's uncle told him that Fassbender knows Barbara and already has first refusal on Bond when Craig leaves. Make of that what you will.

Most of these remakes are a waste of time but The Fly is very good. I'd add Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and The Thing (1982) as two more worthwhile remakes off the top of my head.
