I don't think I have seen it. I'm sure it was on one of the Channel 5 channels in the UK recently. Well, Patrick McGoohan brought me there, and thus it's a spy thriller. And then, it's based on a novel by Alistair MacLean, so it's got to be awesome like you said.Capt. The Muppets. 7/10. Perhaps not as many laughs as I would have liked, but a sweet-natured tribute to Jim Henson's compassionate and optimistic spirit nonetheless.

It's a good film - and always on tv. It was going to be a Bond like series but the film was a bit of a flop.John P. Drake wrote:

Re: The Last Movie You Watched
That's what surprises me. An awesome film like that resulted in a flop? Good God! Yes, in the 1970s, they thought James Bond Series was going to end with the departure of Sean Connery, so they brought brand new spy series. Phillip Calvert project was going to be launched only if When Eight Bells Toll resulted in a huge success, and sadly that failed because of the sissy hippies movement. I wish that never happened. However, I rate this film 4 out of 5. Hopkins' performance was outstanding, the music score was splendid, the plot twists were great, the dialogues were awesome. After all, it's an Alistair MacLean adventure.Capt. Sir Dominic Flandry wrote:It's a good film - and always on tv. It was going to be a Bond like series but the film was a bit of a flop.John P. Gi Joe Retaliation, not a great film but entertaining. Now that I think about it I can't recall what GI Joe one was about so no idea if this was a good follow up or a Rock movie.

5 out of 10 just cause it was watchable

Captain America: The First Avenger. Funny, although it was a superhero-slash-war film and not a spy film, it had more of a classic Bond feel than any Bond film since the reboot.

Some of the recent comic book adaptation have a Bond flavour, which is sad since Bond has lost it's edge adopting bland spy franchise elements.
When I first saw Batman Begins it was an eye opener because it arguably stole a large amount from Bond while keeping the uniqueness needed for that universe. I don't care for the later movies as much but it showed what careful producers could be capable of, enlightening because the Bond producers has phoned it in for a very long time.

You can see Bond in Bale. Tall, dark-haired, handsome, sense of humor, etc. Definitely a Bond material or the Bond material as it once was.

Re: The Last Movie You Watched
Pacific Rim. The "Transformers meets Godzilla" comparisons only really scratch the surface. This is better than any blockbuster movie in years at creating a world that seems to have life beyond the confines of the story being told. You could get entire spin-off stories based on a single line of dialogue or background detail. I don't want Idris Elba as Bond, but he works perfectly here, though it's Ron Perlman who really steals the show in the few scenes he's in. Some interesting subversion of Hollywood's usual glorification of the maverick who defies authority, too. I hope it's not considered a spoiler to say that this is a film in which disobeying orders rarely ends well.
9/10 - would have been 10 except for the occasional cliche ("Let's finish this" - oh dear).

I might go to see Pacific rim although it may be too late to help it. Overseas is they place to support it now.
Lone Ranger (The movie that lost Disney over $150 million dollars)
**** 4 stars out of 10
Man this movie sucked! I found it offense to Native Americans, whites, birds, horses, women & children, whores, you name it.
Spoilers below although I'll keep it to a minimum.
The movie starts in 1933, I don't know why they did it since it completely take the viewer out of the moment, essentially an old west movie that begins after the death of the old west. Here we see ancient Tonto standing still like he is part of the exhibit in a traveling old west circus sideshow, a young boy approaches dressed like the Lone Ranger and the wax statue (Johnny Depp with more wrinkles than Judy Dench) "comes to life" mistaking the boy for "kemosabe", he then tells the story of the Lone Ranger.
Skipping most of details Tonto is crazy goes around with a dead bird on his head and face paint hunting wendigo. As far as I can tell Tonto practices pseudo Indian mysticism / spiritualism, some of the tradition / lore are true but the movie is mixing different tribes beliefs very badly. I found all this very insulting to Native America Culture although I'm not an Indian like Johnny Depp claims to be complete with spray tan.
Movie on to the real problem the story. The bad guys make no sense, one is a cannibal for apparently no other reasons than he is a creepy, creepy guy. Played very well by the creepy William Fichtner. The other is a power hungry pillar of the community who does something even more insane at a board meeting happening in the middle of a start up train town for some reason that escapes me.
Of course the bad guys have the protection of the law and army, a cliched Calvary officer and cliched Comanches play their parts to little effect on the story. Poor representation of both groups.
We got the whore with a heart of gold and some Scrimshaw. She plays a very big role in the final story battle although how she came to play a role in it or why she agreed are never explained beyond a vendetta against the creepy villain explained earlier in the movie. But her involvement is so pivotal there should be more of an explanation.
We got the Lone Rangers love interest, his recently widowed sister in law
. They apparently have a history before he left for law school back east. [spoil]although I was wondering if her kid wasn't supposed to be the Lone Rangers and his brother married her to keep it in the family, but the movie never touches this and I can't tell the age the boy is supposed to be.[/spoil]
The trouble is the love story has nothing to it, for comparison pick any Craig movie where he is supposed to have chemistry with his leading lady, yes it is that bad.
The cast is not bad really, even Depp would be acceptable if he hadn't made Tonto so bizarre. And the Carnivorous Rabbits........ WTF?!
The good point of the movies are the stunts and back ground, Texas as seen in the four corners area of Navajo land. Beautiful country. Still I'd say rent it before any one considers buying it. This movie has a bad reputation and deserves it, unlike John Carter which was a good movie Disney didn't support that got a bad reputation and poor BO, the Lone Ranger is the movie Disney shouldn't of made let alone given it's full support. Everyone heard the stories about what they were trying to do and warned them it would be a big mistake. Besides you don't make a western costing as mush as a Transformers sequel even if it is in 3D. Westerns only really appeal to the audience here, the worldwide audience is less of a fan.
As of today The Lone Ranger has made $150 million, BO Mojo has the Cost at $215 million other stories covering the BO bomb have it at $250 million, this is before the cost of advertising the movie which adds another $175 million, $425 million total cost.

an abysmal number considering the film's $250 million production budget and a worldwide marketing spend in the neighborhood of $175 million, the norm these days for many summer event pics.
Given its poor opening and stiff July competition, box office experts now calculate that Lone Ranger will reach only $125 million domestically, if that. Overseas, it may earn $150 million for a worldwide total of $275 million. In 2011, Disney was forced to take a $200 million write-down when the ill-fated John Carter -- costing more than $250 million to produce -- topped out at $282 million worldwide. (Disney should fare a bit better on Lone Ranger because it will do better domestically than John Carter's $73 million, and the studio receives a higher percentage of revenue from domestic theaters than it does from international theaters.)

Re: The Last Movie You Watched
Anna Karenina. Mrs Kristatos's choice, but those of you with long memories may remember me pushing this film at one time, on the grounds that it was due to open against Skyfall. Having now seen it, I'd say we dodged a bullet when it moved release dates, as it would have put us in the embarrassing position of bashing Skyfall by promoting a film that was even more arty and pretentious. Director Joe Wright presents it like a stage play in order to symbolise the artificiality of Anna's life in Russian society and, having hit upon this gimmick, milks it until it becomes very annoying very quickly. Every frame is filled with unnecessary bits of business, and scene transitions are accomplished by stage hands moving scenery around, so that it's hard to tell what's happening where. I suppose Wright is to be commended for trying to do something different with a story that has been filmed many times before (around 30 according to IMDb), but ultimately, it's an experiment that fails. 3/10, mostly for Keira Knightley and Jude Law's performances - the rest of the cast hams it up like mad in order to add to the theatricality of the piece.
