A View To A Kill Tribute thread

Post by carl stromberg »

I thought I'd start a tribute thread to the much maligned A View To A Kill. Yes Roger was maybe a bit too Bond it would have been fun to have a new Bond enjoying Cubby's production, John Barry's music etc. But it is great fun with an 80's look, great music, good cast.

Say something nice about Roger's last appearance.
Bring back Bond!

I've always loved A View To A Kill. Duran Duran's awesome title song is my favourite, and I equally love John Barry's score. There's pretty good action scenes, like the pre-title sequence (no, I don't mind the California Girls song, because I've got a campy sense of humour  ), and the Golden Gate Bridge fight. Christopher Walken is great as Max Zorin. He's a crazy but cool character. I always get a kick out of when he laughs just before he falls to his death, or when he says "More! More Power!" Actually, with his accent it sounds like "More Powah!" I enjoy the rest of the cast too, especially Grace Jones and Patrick Macnee. I don't mind Stacey Sutton as much as most people do. Her damsel in distress character may easily get on peoples nerves, but as I've constantly been rescuing blonde damsels in distress in various Nintendo games for years, it really doesn't bother me too much.

I like the 80's feel as well as all sorts of little things about A View To A Kill. If it wasn't for all the production problems, then it could have been even better, but I still enjoy the film as it is. It has a couple of funny deleted scenes I like as well:

I always have a good time whenever I watch A View To A Kill and don't think it's nearly as bad as the fans make out sometimes. Fantastic John Barry score (love Snow Job), the lavish scenes set at Zorin's estate and stables, Patrick Macnee, Christopher Walken. I think Roger looked better in this film than he did in Octopussy too.

I like the illustrated posters for A View To A Kill. Have one of the original 1985 posters that features Roger Moore and Grace Jones standing back to back with the tag line 'Has James Bond Finally Met His Match?'

The action scene at the Eiffel Tower was pretty cool and I also like Zorin's airship.

Duran Duran's title song was quite good as well.

The film as a whole was a bit lame though, but I think I like it better than Octopussy.

Nice things? Actually, to my surprise I can find a couple.

Unlike the lackluster indifference of Diamonds Are Forever and the "throw-in-everything-INCLUDING-the-kitchen-sink" Anniversary madness of Die Another Day, THIS movie actually felt like a worthy swansong/tribute to Roger Moore's reign as James Bond. Even John Barry's music seems to have been composed to fit that feeling of impending sadness at the inevitable end of an era.

Despite his aged appearance, Moore's performance itself is NOT an embarrassment at all. If anything, he's as charming and witty, but also determined and serious as he ever was (such as his reaction to Zorin's shooting Stacy's former boss dead; nothing "flippant" about THAT at all). It was just the sad case of "the spirit was willing but the flesh was weak".

As said before: Bond and Steed, together at last!

Christopher Walken's stilted, creepy line-readings always crack me up. ("To control... NOT ONLY PRODUCTION!! But distribution!" "Main Strike's in three days... Any delays... I hold you responsible." "To end.... the domination... of Silicon Valley...")

But mostly, Alison Doody as Jenny Flex. NICE.

 LMAO - this made me laugh a lot as it's spot on Barry! Walken is great as the Zorin character to the point I almost wish they didn't kill the character off! Would have been interesting to see Dalton's Bond up against him, actually.
