Was Die Another Day that bad?

Post by carl stromberg »

Die Another Day did well when it came out. The critics liked it. But now, after the bitter arguments over Casino Royale, some people seem to rubbish it on every occasion and it has overtaken Moonraker as the film that lots of people say they love to hate.

Was it as bad as some people say?

Bad is a word too kind to describe this awful, steaming pile of manure.

MR was silly towards the end, but there weren't that many cheesy one-liners, and the film did have some redeeming scenes (the take-off simulator was superb).

DAD was an amazing film in that it managed to contain not even one redeeming feature. For that it should be applauded.

I thought DAD was reasonably entertaining as an OTT fantastical Bond film. It has too many flaws to mention though. Casino Royale is far from flawless and suffers from the cardinal sin of being a po-faced James Bond film.

In this case slang for humorless.

Po-faced is actually an old latin phrase which translates as dreary Jason Bourne knock-off.

What has Bond rip-off Bourne got to do with Casino Royale?

Have you seen CR James?
To call it po-faced would appear that you haven't.
Or maybe you just don't understand humour.
As for DAD, yes it really was that bad, from an opening surf scene which although original, it does ask the question of where the agents came from?
Or the invisible car., the gene therapy , the robo-cop suit , the ice surfing , the poor cgi on the anatov , the jinx character , the omission of a signature Bond stunt  , yep DAD easily wins the worst Bond film of all time.

Someone wrote a review of CR once which called it a cross between a Transporter/Bourne film, a James Bond film, a glitzy commercial for posh chocolates and a po-faced 'worthy' Daniel Craig film. That's sort of how I feel. It works agaisnt itself by throwing all these elements in. One minute Craig is leaping around scaffolding like Spider-Man and killing dozens of people like John Rambo and then he's wobbling his drink in front of a mirror, conspicously acting as if he's playing a drunk in some serious British indie film. Regarding the humour, I do know that most of the Bond films have some good jokes and laugh out loud moments. CR didn't. Perhaps it was deliberate. I like Oscar Wilde, Joseph Heller and Woody Allen when I'm in need of a chuckle. I don't think think I'll be adding Purvis and Wade to that list just yet.

Now, back on topic everyone. This is a Die Another Day thread

When did he do this?

Well after your martini has been laced with poison and it's taking effect I'm wondering how he should act.

Again I have to disagree with you. but it's obviously gone over your head.

No, after the poison incident Bond went back in to play another hand. His drink wobbling was after the stairwell fight. I can't believe a CR naysayer is having to explain these things...

What can't you believe? I didn't really know exactly which bathroom scene you were referring to either. Maybe you should have clarified a bit more during your Craig-bashing.

And I thought that particular bathroom scene was the closest thing yet to the Bond of the novels. Bloody, bruised, staring himself in the mirror to reflect on what had just happened, and then swigging a mouthful of bourbon. Perfect scene! There were many moments like this in the books, its just that we've never seen them on film before.

I can't believe you can't explain the scene more clearly.
But it appears the sweeney has answered the question for you.
The scene with Bond drinking the bourbon after the stairwell fight is so typically Fleming.
After killing a man with your bare hands, and the thought that the poker game your set to play in will soon restart I'd like to see anyone regain there composure.
I think it was a very Bondian scene, and well played by Craig.
God only knows what a hash Brosnan would've made of this scene.

Bond's kill count was 14 at most, hardly Rambo.

After Bond was poisoned he took a glass of water and mixed it with salt, you could easily have meant that, so don't get all high and mighty.

The drink wobbling in front of the mirror scene as in the drink wobbling in front of the mirror scene. Was there another drink wobbling in front of the mirror scene? If I'd meant the shower scene I'd have said the shower scene. I do find it slightly comical that you were the one who sat through this masterpiece in an apparent state of euphoria yet make basic mistakes in relation to the chronology of the film.

After Bond was poisoned, as mentioned. Water, salt etc. he's poisoned, shaking, drink wobbling.
