14 very interesting choices for CR that could have been.

Over 200 actors were considered for the role of James Bond in the series reboot Casino Royale. Here are 14 very interesting choices that would've given us a very different James Bond.
MrMurdockk - 8/24/2012
James Bond, code name 007, is a fictional character created in 1953 by writer Ian Fleming, who featured him in twelve novels and two short story collections.

Casino Royale reboots the series, establishing a new timeline and narrative framework not meant to precede or succeed any previous Bond film. This allowed the film to show a less experienced and more vulnerable Bond and for the first time in the series the character of Miss Moneypenny does not appear. Casting the film involved a widespread search for a new actor to portray James Bond, and significant controversy surrounded Craig when he was selected to succeed Pierce Brosnan in October 2005. Location filming took place in the Czech Republic, The Bahamas, Italy and the United Kingdom with interior sets built at Pinewood Studios. Although part of the storyline was set in Montenegro, no filming took place there. Casino Royale was produced by Eon Productions for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Columbia Pictures, making it the first Eon-produced Bond film to be co-produced by the latter studio.

ORLANDO BLOOM
Photobucket

Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit.

It is unknown whether or not Eon ever seriously considered Bloom, but MGM did.

GERARD BUTLER
Photobucket

300, Gamer, Machine Gun Preacher.

Often suggested by fans, Butler was considered in March 2005.

HENRY CAVILL
Photobucket

Immortals, The Cold Light of Day, Man of Steel.

Director Martin Campbell said that in the end it was between Daniel Craig and Cavill. Cavill lost out because, at 22, he was just too young.

RUPERT FRIEND
Photobucket

Pride & Prejudice, The Young Victoria, 5 Days of War.

Friend gave an impressive reading and was at one point in the selection process was as serious a candidate as Henry Cavil.

DANIEL GODDARD
Photobucket

BeastMaster, Dream Warrior, Immortally Yours.

Nothing more is known about Goddard’s candidacy.

MARTIN HENDERSON
Photobucket

The Ring, Torque, Smokin' Aces.

At 5’9″ Henderson was the shortest contender.

JULIAN MCMAHON
Photobucket

Profiler, Fantastic Four, Nip/Tuck.

Greatly impressed both Eon and Campbell, but apparently did not make the finals for reasons unknown.

ALEX O'LOUGHLIN
Photobucket

Moonlight, The Back-Up Plan, Hawaii Five-0.

O’Lachlan confirmed for The Daily Telegraph that he had tested for the role in full wardrobe.

DOUGRAY SCOTT
Photobucket

Ever After, Mission: Impossible II, Enigma.

Scott was ultimately considered too old for the role.

ANTONY STARR
Photobucket

Without a Paddle, In My Father's Den, Wish You Were Here.

Starr gave an impressive reading in Summer 2005.

KARL URBAN
Photobucket

Lord of the Rings, Red, DREDD.

Was considered in March 2005, but his look was not right for James Bond.

GORAN VISNJIC
Photobucket

ER, Elektra, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Visnjic had impressed Campbell with a screen-test for Zorro so the director suggested he test as 007.

DOMINIC WEST
Photobucket

300, Johnny English Reborn, John Carter.

West told the Daily Telegraph he appeared at his audition in jeans and a t-shirt to be “different from the other actors who were all wearing suites and tuxes."

SAM WORTHINGTON
Photobucket

Avatar, Terminator: Salvation:, Clash of the Titans.

Worthington was reportedly one of the full dress screen-test finalists and may have been in the final three with Craig and Cavill.

Bond:
Henry Cavill
Karl Urban
Gerard Butler
Alex O'Loughlin
Dougray Scott
Sam Worthington

Not Bond:
Orlando Bloom
Goran Visnjic
Dominic West
Daniel Craig

The rest I have to mark as don't knows, since I don't recall seeing them in anything and I don't want to judge them based on just a photograph.

Just about anyone would do a better job than Craig.
I was a Worthington fanboy after his comments about Bond in the last few years I'm out.

Still a lot of unknowns for me,

Bond:
Henry Cavill
Karl Urban
Gerard Butler
Daniel Goddard
Julian McMahon
Martin Henderson

Not Bond:
Orlando Bloom
Daniel Craig
Sam Worthington
Alex O'Loughlin

Martin Henderson I had a hard time remembering but he was in Flyboys and a pretty cool cat at that. Butler I am less convinced would be a good Bond, decent is my standard now. Dominic West was Simon Ambrose I simply don't know.

I'd take all of those over Craig although I can't really see Orlando Bloom playing Bond. He looks about 15 years old.
