Since CR, I've had the feeling the Producers were ashamed off the Older Movies, And where Trying hard to distance themselves from them. Hence
No Bond music ( except for a few minor parts ), None of the older characters except M ( why they kept Dame Judi, I'll never know as it spoils the
timeline of the reboot ). Dropping all humor etc there are many more But I'll not list them all.
Last night on Sony TV ( a satellite station ) during an old episode of SPOOKS they ran the trailer, and I couldn't help thinking how it looked like
an episode of Spooks. Only not as well filmed, with not so good lighting.

When they mentioned Skyfall, I said definitely not interested.
Good for you. Striking a real blow for the resistance (depending on how many people they sample, of course, and how many others say the same thing, but you do what you can)

Based on EON's history (and I don't just mean recent history either), I'm guessing Mendes was significantly cheaper.

Since the dismissal of Pierce, EON's motive is all for personal gain.

But EON have always been cheapskates. Witness Cubby's refusal to hire Spielberg (who was then at the apex of his career) to direct FYEO, or to bring John Barry back for Goldeneye because he demanded to be paid the going rate for his services.

And their motives went for the worst when they summoned DC.

Film producers who pick cheaper 2nd rate talent to make their films are only in the long run doing themselves out of extra money...........because if you pay the talented artists upfront, then they are more than likely going to do a better job on a film, which should result in higher BO grosses.......which means the producers get more money anyway!

That's how we ended up with a 2nd rate actor playing Bond.

New York Times, October 2005:
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/15/movie ... 5bond.html

Excerpt:

"I was desperately afraid, and Barbara was desperately afraid, we would go downhill," said Michael G. Wilson, the producer of the new Bond film, "Casino Royale," with Ms. Broccoli. He even told that to Pierce Brosnan, the suave James Bond who had a successful run of four films, he said.

"We are running out of energy, mental energy," Mr. Wilson recalled saying. "We need to generate something new, *for ourselves.*"(emphasis added)

(snip)

Mr. Brosnan continued to lobby publicly for the role, and as recently as a week ago told The San Francisco Chronicle he was still available.

But Mr. Wilson said the decision did not have to do with money. "If we wanted to make a deal, we would've made a deal with Pierce at some financially viable level," he said. "This was ***about us*** trying to find new inspiration for the series." (emphasis added)

(more snip)

Ms.(?Amy) Pascal (Sony executive) said fans would have to wait to see the movie before judging Mr. Craig. As for the online criticism, she observed: ***"Well, he is tall. He's the same size as Sean Connery." *** (emphasis added).

In what world is he the same size as Connery? Aside from the holder art for the 50th dvd set there Craig is taller than the other Bonds.

Desperately afraid they would go down hill well after QOS nobody would say that are going up hill and its not like DAD was such a high watermark they'd never reach it again but at least it was Bond being Bond no matter how bad the producers are at their job.

Wait, isn't this the same Michael Wilson who claimed to be totally exhausted after QOS, so much so that SF's development got delayed even before the MGM financial crisis hit? Guess Craig didn't give him that much mental energy then. . .

Interesting reading. I seem to remember that Michael G wilson was always hot for a Bond reboot. It was something he
suggested a few times to cubby.

Yeah, he suggested it with TLD. I heard at least once though that what Wilson wanted was Dalton as a younger Bond in the Cold War or World War II, which (if I heard right) wouldn't really be a reboot so much as keeping Bond closer to his source material rather than updating with the times. I daresay that a period Bond could very well be a good idea, because it wouldn't be "rebooting" Bond and spitting all over the Bond legacy by creating a PC, glum character who has to ape every latest cinematic trend like the Bourne movies or Batman. A period Bond might even be allowed to be more "un-PC" (if that's the word), which wouldn't be a bad thing.

That would have been interesting if they did that with Dalton! Probably considered so they could show Bond being noticeably younger than Sir Rog.

It's hard to figure out what Mikey is thinking at any given moment. He's the red headed stepchild of the Broccoli family.

I first read he felt exhausted after Tomorrow Never Dies. Given, the various script problems and tight deadlines, I didn't think that much of it. But he said it again after The World Is Not Enough and again after Die Another Day (despite the extra year inbetween films). And he did it again after Quantum. He doesn't sound very happy and enthusiastic, even though, as a producer, he has a *guaranteed sale*.

Actually, in some respects, it's quite easy:

1) He's exhausted after a Bond movie is completed and he feels doing them is a huge burden.

2) He feels none of the continuation novels are worthy of Eon's time (even if using one might save some script development time in that they could at least start out with a basic plot, rather than the seeming agonizing search for one).

Not sure how I feel about using the continuation novels as the basis for movies. For one thing, at least one of them is set in the 60's, so they would need modernizing, and punching up.
