Would you have enjoyed Casino Royale w/o Craig as Bond?
Greetings,
I went into "Casino Royale" prepared to really dislike Daniel Craig, not because of any particular animus I have for Mr. Craig but rather because I thought that the treatment Pierce Brosnan received at the hands of the producers was beneath shabby.
My distaste for the business practices of Wilson and Broccoli spilled over into resentment for the new Bond actor and I am sure that I would felt the same no matter who took over the role after the way Brosnan was treated.
Nonetheless, I did enjoy Casino Royale. There were moments which were very much Bond but then again, for me, there were enough moments when it didn't really feel like a Bond film. Still, overall, I believed it a good film and a perfectly satisfactory entry in the Bond series.
I thought hard about whether Brosnan could have done Casino Royale as it was written for Craig and I came to the conclusion that he certainly could have pulled it off. Of course, for the film to be tailored to Brosnan one would have to jettison the whole "First Adventure" conceit and as it was the "First Adventure" "How Bond Became Bond" theme seemed very underplayed in my opinion especially considering how important the producers made the whole need for a reboot appear.
If someone had walked into the film after the pre-credit sequence there would have been very little to clue a viewer in on this being Bond's first mission.
Anyway, considering the lambasting that Craig took from a good segment of the Bond Fan base (much of it very unkind and unwarranted as it dwelt primarily upon his appearance) I think that he proved up to the challenge of executing a serious and believeable take on 007.
I miss Brosnan and I wish that he had been given an additional opportunity to perform in a Bond film absent silliness like Casino Royale; but here we are and Casino Royale with Daniel Craig is an undeniable financial and critical success.
While Daniel Craig was not my first or even fifth choice for a new Bond, he has more than adequately essayed the role of James Bond and his interpretation of this classic character is growing on me.
But that is just my humble opinion...

Still would be upset with commercialism and the story has a bunch of problems.carl stromberg wrote:Would you have enjoyed Casino Royale without Craig as Bond?
However cr with a actor I enjoyed watching could have changed my mind.

I'd still have a problem with the way the whole reboot idea was handled. An origin story is one thing, effectively telling us that the last 20 Bond films never happened is quite another.carl stromberg wrote:Would you have enjoyed Casino Royale without Craig as Bond?

Re: Would you have loved CR without Craig as Bond?
That's really an unanswerable question to some degree. I'm glad that Brosnan didn't do it.carl stromberg wrote:Would you have enjoyed Casino Royale without Craig as Bond?
He was too old, and too limited an actor to pull it off.
But having seen and enjoyed CasinoRoyale I can't think of anyone off the top of my head who I think could've given a better result.
