Harrison Ford Didn't Understand 'Cowboys & Aliens' Script

The man who made Blade Runner and the same man who mad Indy 4 couldn't understand CvA? Sounds like this may be Ford's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Harrison Ford has admitted that he didn't really get Cowboys & Aliens when he first read the script. The 68-year-old actor takes a leading role in the movie - set in a 1870s mid-western US town under attack by aliens - alongside James Bond star Daniel Craig. Ford admits he threw his copy across the room and demanded to speak to his agent upon seeing the first 30 pages, and had to see the film's director John Favreau to discuss the part.

"Well I read 30 pages and then I threw it across the room and I called my agent and I said, 'I don't get it. There's nothing in this for me. Why are you asking me to do this?' He said, 'Have a little faith, this is the way of the world now. You're an older person, maybe you don't understand how things work. Read the rest of the script.' So I read the rest of the script, and I said, 'I don't get it!' So I said, 'Why don't I go and see John Favreau?'" Ford explained.

However, the Indiana Jones star was eventually convinced because he saw it as an opportunity to try something new.

Speaking in discussion with John, he added: "I thought this was clearly something I haven't done before and one of the things to do at this stage is something if you haven't done before. As much as I have been part of sci-fi movies, I always approach them as fairytales. I didn't really think of the sci-fi."

Hm... we're not sure if this gives us hope or concern for Cowboys & Aliens. Either way, we'll be seeing it! Will you? Sound off below in our comment section.

I already bought my ticket for midnight showing in IMAX.

Captain America looks like it's going to be awesome, but sorry, this year (especially summer) is about Potter and NOTHING MORE. And let's not even talk about CvA.

Ha! The guy who thought Crystal Skull was a good idea tought this movies was crazy, this may be a point for CvA

Day one this movie had script problems, Ford wasn't brought on until later and he saw the problems clear as day. Smart people are involved so they could have worked out the kinks for good final product. The experience is there however the word has long been how cocked up the script and rewrites were.

With a scene-stealing performance as Quorra in Tron: Legacy last year and a starring role in Cowboys and Aliens this summer, Olivia Wilde seems poised to take the title of sci-fi queen away from Sigourney Weaver. However, things could have turned out quite differently for the 27-year-old actress if she had landed the role of James Bond's (Daniel Craig) love interest, Vesper Lynd, in director Martin Campbell's Casino Royale, a role that she wanted "so badly," but which ultimately went to British actress Eva Green. In a recent interview with Total Film Magazine, Wilde said that she is "happy it didn't work out" on Casino Royale because then she "wouldn't have been able to do" Cowboys and Aliens alongside Craig. She said the sci-fi and Western mash-up movie is "a better pairing" for her and Craig and that she learned a great deal about acting by working with the once-and-future James Bond.

Daniel Craig taught me a lot. He taught me about stillness and silence… he does very little and it’s very impressive.

Cowboys and Aliens, which was written for the screen by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Damon Lindelof, is a genre-mashed tale involving an alien invasion of a small town in the Wild West in the 1800s. Wilde revealed that, in much the same way she learned by watching Craig, her character in the movie, Ella, learns by watching Craig's character, Jake Lonergan, a loner with a troubled past who might be the key to humanity's survival against the aliens.

[Ella's] not just the love interest. She’s not simply sultry. She has a lot in common with Jake and she’s watching him very closely, because any clues he can give her as to where he’s been will help her on her journey. She’s been hiding in the town. She wants to fade into the shadows and only comes out when Jake arrives.

Cowboys and Aliens was directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Iron Man 2). The supporting cast includes Harrison Ford as Colonel Dolarhyde, Paul Dano as Percy Dolarhyde, Keith Carradine as Sheriff Taggart, Abigail Spencer as Alice, Noah Ringer as Emmett and Sam Rockwell as Doc.

I do not think she was right for the role paired with Daniel (not that Green was a good catch either), however with a younger man, oh, say Henry Cavill it could have been a historic paring.

The TV spot made it look bad,I don't think they were really pushing Craig as the lead IMO they were trying to show Harrison Ford's face and use his voice to promote it.Doesn't matter it look like a bad made for TV scy-fy event.If this is the best ad they can come up with it will fail.

The ad going around looked like a direct rip off of SG: Atlantis! It was a poorly done ad it was obvious they cut together the best actions scenes and try to have voice overs that made it compelling. I think it shows Craig leaping to a flying washboard and some redneck asking should we help then Indiana Jones say No. All I saw were parts of old MIB and SG stories I really do get the vibe that CvA is going to bomb.

I don't think it will be Craig's fault if it does, this movies look worse the more they try to show it off, why would anybody pay to see it when it will be in the $5 rack in less than year and online sooner than that, from what they have shown it is not worth $10 to see it.
