At the heart of most of the praise is the aspect that, for us at least, has always been the central draw: the pairing of James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as the young Charles Xavier/Professor X and Erik Lensherr/Magneto. Opinion differs as to the film’s MVP, with Bleeding Cool going for McAvoy, saying that “I don’t think you can really call the star of a film a scene-stealer, but McAvoy is the best thing in more or less every sequence he’s in, which translates to more or less all of the film. He even gets the opportunity to pull off some great little comedy bits and, when necessary, packs just enough emotional punch.” Meanwhile McWeeny highlights his opposite number, saying that “Michael Fassbender emerges from this one a movie star, no doubt about it. He’s a great Erik, a great nascent Magneto. He spends the first third of the movie auditioning for James Bond, and as far as I’m concerned, he can have the job whenever Daniel Craig‘s done with it.” And I Am Rogue calls the Irish-German actor “especially badass as the future Magneto.”

Matthew Vaughn Talks X-MEN: FIRST CLASS,and 007

During the interview with HitFix, Vaughn opened up about one of the biggest influences on First Class, the James Bond films:

“I watched all the early Bond movies again. You Only Live Twice, I watched a couple of times. I really wanted it to feel like a ’60s Bond film, but with a little bit of reality it could be grounded in. I wanted there to be just a hint of this world of the mutants coming through. A mutant in this world having powers needed to be the equivalent of you or I sneezing, as normal as possible, at least until the humans start seeing it for the first time.”
Finally, given the immense influence the early Bond films had on First Class, Vaughn talked about his desire to one day helm a Bond flick of his own:

“I sort of want the Brocollis (producers of the Bond films) to regret never hiring me. I was very keen to direct Bond. I don’t know if I am any more, to be blunt, now that I’ve done this. I really love Daniel [Craig], though you know, it might be interesting if they one day decide to cast Fassbender as Bond, then maybe I’ll go ‘Hey!’”
