Does anyone insted think that Daniel Craig is an English version of Steve Mcqueen for the 21st century, i.e acting cooly, tough and with a dry wit?

EA :)
I wouldn't compare McQueen to Craig, I see where some think he looks like him but McQ was cool, didn't have to act. When Craig tries to act cool to me come off cold. The Bond poses he looks nothing like McQ, Mc Q had a natural warmth which helped make him cool. But then I didn't grow up watching him as his movies were made, I seen his stuff long after the fact that he was dead and already a icon of his age.

I am going to look for some pictures of McQ smiling to show what I am talking about. I'm not saying Craig is cold becuase he can't copy Mc Q I think it may be what he is going for.

Don't want to take up too much room with the pictures but here are a few.

I don't think this looks like Bond, Felix? Too bad they never tired him for that role.

This is one where I think Craig does look like him

McQueen would not have been right for the role as Bond, especially considering that he would have been following Connery.

I think Craig is going for the McQueen look, but he ends up looking like a mutated version of him, as in Casino Royale.

I saw some screen shots on the internet of Craig in his film Cowboys and Aliens. He looks fine in those pics, but he still doesn't look like James Bond to me.

Well that's fine Bond77, I suppose Craig isn't going to please all the fans.
I recall on GoldenEye, Roger Moore visiting the Leavesden set and joking with me that he'd been rehired. That they'd seen the rushes / dailies and were not impressed, so were letting me go.

I agree with you about Roger Moore. I am fan of his work with Bond, and outside of it. He's great in interviews. Read his book and thought it was great.

You are right. You can't expect Craig to please everyone. Although, I think that Craig's Bond has not pleased a lot of people. However, if Broccoli and Craig have enough fans and Sony's support to keep their vision going, then God bless them. Just count me out.

And I don't want to seem like I am making personal attacks towards Craig's looks. He looks fine in those pictures from Cowboys and Aliens. However, in Casino Royale he especially looks strange, and I think he was made to look that way. Kind of a cross between Steve McQueen and Carrot Top. I don't know? Maybe the love child of Red Grant and Rosa Klebb? I'm not sure what was going on. Perhaps Ale and Katied can help me out here.

I actually think it was a concious decision by the producers to cash in on the Craig/McQueen similarities. The wardrobe Craig wears in both CR and QoS is very McQueen (particularly the cardigan, the outfit during the Miami airport scene, and the scene in QoS when Craig is on the motorbike.

Craig would probably be ideally cast to play McQueen in a biopic. I don't think many here would argue with that casting for Craig.

I wouldn't blink at Craig being cast for the Biopic. However Damian Lewis might be a better choice but you know McQueen's widow had approved of the possibility casting Craig so it shouldn't be an issue to anybody, depending on what the pic is going to be about and how that would work with Craig's ability. Also his accents aren't the greatest. Damian Lewis accents are better but also have a few issues from time to time.

EON finally settled on the McQueen ripoff after plenty of testing and it doesn't always work depending on for example the angle or haircut. Also the permanent PO face. They had tried 3 or 4 other looks. Funny to model Bond off McQueen, laughable if it weren't so sad.

I think Omega made the perfect point.

While I do see a resemblance, and of course I would never say Craig is miscast to play McQueen (who am I to say that, if McQueen's widow approves?) I don't find him nearly as charming or as cool as McQueen was. I think the photos of McQueen smiling that Omega posted actually are the perfect example. McQueen did not pout, Craig does that constantly. McQueen played the cool type but he really did have a warmth and a NATURAL sexiness and coolness to himself that were the reason why he was cast as the cool type. He didn't need to "force" the coolness. He had it. I do not see that in Craig at all. I do agree of course they look similar, I think the personality though is drastically different. McQueen had a fantastic smile that really made you feel like he was smiling at you. He looked like he was genuinely having fun and like he really was happy. When I see Craig smile, I think that behind the smile, he's miserable. That he's doing it because he has to. I mean it, to me he comes off as "rigid" (for lack of a better word), even when he smiles. And I've seen him and talked to him in person so it's not like I'm basing this on movies. Of course that is my personal reaction and perception which won't be the same for everyone.

I think the main difference between them, besides, may be a very simple one: Craig is British, McQueen was American. That implies a general difference in attitude and approach that may be one of the reasons why I perceive them as so different, despite the resemblance.

And, I don't think McQueen would have been right for Bond at all. Especially not back then.

Trying to remember if Craig's done an American accent in any of his movies. I won't say that Brits should NEVER do American accents..it's just that there are so many that have and have done a bad job. That's what I'm worried about as far as Craig playing McQueen goes.

Didn't Craig play an American in Road to Perdition? I can't remember now, but I think he did...

I agree with this. McQueen's coolness came natural to him. He was the king of cool.

When Craig is playing cool, it feels like a performance, not natural.

Martin Campbell introduced Brosnan and Cr-egg as Bond. July 2011 he will do so with Reynolds as the Green Lantern in his first superhero, not superspy, film. Do you anticipate a successful film opening for Campbell? If so, will he introduce Henry Cavill as the 7th 007 at the same time he does a Green Lantern sequel? Ryan Reynolds as a superhero? He is not my first choice but we will see how this films develops. Will it surpass Superman Returns in box office revenue?

Met Craig in NYC EA. And he was nice enough (I mean far more than I would have expected, after all I was a stranger, even if we had a friend in common and that's the reason why I met him). I think he's got beautiful eye color. And... that's it  Sorry, I really wasn't impressed with the general looks (Surely he wasn't impressed with mine either  ) and I didn't even notice him when I arrived at the place, I only saw him because he was talking to the owner of the place, who is a friend. He's MUCH thinner in person, not built at all. And, he isn't tall. I was wearing high heels and he wasn't taller than me, quite the opposite. And I am 1mt 67 cm. So with those heels I was 1 mt 78 cm.

Met Pierce in NYC. Love him. He's gorgeous, classy, funny, heart-warming. I had to prevent my friend from going all fangirl on him, she didn't expect him to be that good-looking in person. It was quite the funny moment.

Haven't met the others, though a very good friend of mine had quite the odd meeting with Sir Sean while she was on vacation in Bali. They were staying at the same resort. She speaks fondly of him seen as he helped her as she almost fainted.

I would love to meet Sir Roger, I had such the crush on him in "The Pretenders" and I just love his manners, not simply his great looks! Who knows, maybe on my next trip to London... Always liked Timothy, too, but I don't think I know anyone who ever met him or dealt with him in person.
I agree with this. McQueen's coolness came natural to him. He was the king of cool.

That is what I meant. I don't mean to imply that Craig isn't cool as a person, I guess he can be in the appropriate circumstances, but like you, when I see him "play cool" I can tell it's a performance.

I think Ryan Reynolds definitely has the looks and persona to carry out the superhero thing. They also have Blake Lively as the girl, and she is becoming a VERY hot commodity in Hollywood and very quickly, so I think the movie has the potential to do very well at the box office. Ah, don't give me false hopes BJ. Campbell directing Cavill as the 7th 007... basically a perfect Bond movie! If they also give me Minka Kelly as the Bond girl, Djimon Honsou as the bad guy and Jeremy Northam as either a Bond ally or M, I will be in heaven!

How tall would you say he was in feet? I have no idea what it means in m and cm.

Ok, I just put in into an online conversion thing and 1.78 is about 5'10. So if Craig is smaller than 1.78 that means he must be 5'9 or even shorter.
