PIERCE BROSNAN was relieved to give up his 007 status following his stint as JAMES BOND - after realising he had "lost his way" while playing the iconic superspy.
The Irish actor was devastated after he was replaced by Daniel Craig as the suave secret agent and admits it took several years to regain his self-belief.
But now he's convinced his dismissal was for the best.
He says, "I felt very shackled by Bond and didn't want to rock the boat. You get tangled up in your own ego of how you're perceived. You can lose your way...
"You can be a leading man for so long and it's wonderful but there comes a time when you have to deal with life and move over on the stage."
And Brosnan, 57, credits his 2005 comedy drama The Matador with reigniting his passion for performing.
He adds, "It was good to actually act. I have said to my agents, 'I want to work. I want to play character roles.'
"The Matador was a great confidence booster. I really felt like I got a transformation there of some sort."

Odd as he was trying to shake up Bond since GoldenEye.

Alll the Bond actors feel free after they quit. I don't believe for an instant that he think he lsot his way as Bond I know he felt like guy in suit several times but it wasn't his call. I think while they are in the job they can't see how they look out side becasue it is their first thought whne they get up in the morning and and when they don't have to think about it it gives them a different prespective. Dalton said similar things then he was free of it.
Craig is probably feel some of the freedom now and he might be liking it.

I think he could have been just as great in a non-reboot CR if he had only been given the chance.
In my opinion one of the biggest missed opportunities in the history of the series is not having Sean Connery in OHMSS. Sean went out and proved himself after Bond, looking at his filmography even during his time as Bond. He was smothering in the role frustrated he couldn't actually do anything with it much as Pierce was. George Lazenby would have been interesting to see in 2 more outings, however he was wooden too in some respects not to forget a novice to acting. OHMSS with Connery might have been a masterpiece.
Watching Pierce after Bond it is getting clearer and clearer if anything was lacking during his era it wasn't because of him. Nice to see him being so well received especially after being so viciously savaged by you know who.

Yes, they should have filmed the "Blofeld trilogy" in order. I'm pretty sure even Lazenby could have handled YOLT and DAF, given that Bond hardly did anything in those films, and that Connery pretty much phoned in his performances.

4 of those years were back to back filming. I think his time off in 1966 made him say screw it 1967, he had a year off Bond for the first time I don't think he missed the grind and probably didn't look forward to getting back to it next year. Weird he was only gone 4 years when he came back for DAF, seems like longer. Man did the movies change between then.

I read that the final straw for Connery was when some Japanese journalists followed him into the khazi while he was shooting YOLT. He only did DAF because he got offered some incredible deal and thought he would use the money for a charity he was involved in.
