Sheryl Crow loves Connery's Bond

Post by Mazer Rackham »

Two reasons I bothered to post this, first some numb nut would probably cut and past the Mi6 pablum. Second is to point out how destructive Craig is for the franchise.

Here is the story, in a Q&A session with the UK Guardian Crow was asked; Since you sang a Bond theme who is your Favorite Bond? She answered Connery and why.
You also sang the theme tune for the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies. Who is your favourite 007?

Oh, Sean Connery. I love the early James Bonds – Goldfinger is great, Dr No, I love Dr No. I love the campness, the double entendres and sexual innuendos.
However a certain branch of fanboys ever needing approval from their masters in charge of the franchise put this spin on it; Sheryl Crow doesn't like Brosnan.

Bond singer Sheryl Crow admits Connery was her favourite

Sheryl Crow is currently in London promoting her new album, "100 Miles From Memphis". Back in 1997, she recorded the title theme for Pierce Brosnan's second outing as James Bond in "Tomorrow Never Dies".

So, Brosnan is her favourite Bond? No...

"Oh, Sean Connery", she says when asked about her favourite.

"I love the early James Bonds – Goldfinger is great, Dr No, I love Dr No. I love the campness, the double entendres and sexual innuendos."
It took a straight forward news blurb and twisted it in to a dig on Brosnan. Why is this important? When Craig was apposed it wasn't seen as a genuine disagreement on man being miscast in a popular role as it should have been it was viewed as an attack on the franchise which it wasn't. To defend the diminutive Craig along with the reboot trashing 40 years of cinema, Brosnan became the appointed whipping boy, the Bond Cubby created and Ian Fleming approved was attacked. Why? To bolster a man who never wanted the role and didn't like the series. This was dangerous not because the Wonder Twins changed from the formula but because they knowingly started a civil war, a dispute that would etch away at the franchise and ultimately their control.

Nobody in the Batmen franchise or studio went after the Tim Burton on movies. Just as Burton didn't go after the Adam West series to defend his. For whatever reason it was viewed as a good idea to attack the base of what made the Bond franchise unique and worked drawing a steady fan base to the theaters for over 40 years. It is one things for fans to debate the merits among themselves it is entirely another matter for the producers and studio to actively deride it. When the studio attacks it extends credibility to what was otherwise a matter of opinion. In essence adding gasoline to the fire. The problem there is what is burning is a part of the franchise itself.

The money a franchise takes in has a lot invested in the past, the sale of past outings (for broadcast as well as home video) is where the lion's share of profits come from. New movies can be substantial but the continued sales of the catalogs is essential. They damaged the brand when the took on the task of justifying their abandonment of the legacy left to the world by Cubby (and Ian Fleming).

This shines through today with the continued vitriol against past Bond stars. Should any one be surprised by Crow's admiration of Connery? Certainly not. Brozza himself would say the same, as would the majority of the circus of singers brought through the studio doors since 1963. Maybe it was only an attempt to spice up a rather dull entry. The same interview could easily headline "Crow doesn't believe Michael Jackson is dead" or "Crow doesn't like Craig."

I say all of that to say this; When Eon allowed for this derision they opened a Pandora's box of difficulty. Before the Bond movies were just the way they were nobody question it really. Now every aspect of it is questioned and examined in depth by the very people how used to flock in numbly. No franchise can withstand this kind of scrutiny, something has to break off sooner of later. In my view it will be the branch sprouted when they went with Craig.

Mazer you have gone off over nothing. I doubt the goal was to intentionally disrespect Brosnan. You might be right about Craig if for the wrong reasons. The reboot was bad idea because EON didn't have the vision to back it up, the Star Trek and Batman reboots have visions behind them with years of planing. They also have plans for moving forward where Bond does not. As EON made so painfully clear with Quantum Of S.. I have a difficult time believing much in the way of actual work was done developing the third film. When the team comes back I think they are starting from scratch. Not unlike the hiatus before GoldenEye.
