Maybe if Pierce Brosnan had walked around with a stony face and wobbled a drink in front of a mirror whilst covered in blood post-fight after a two hour interminable Spiderman/Matrix/any-other-action-film-you-can-think-of action scene, he would have been called Fleming's Bond too!

The Bond of the novels wasn't exactly a bundle of laughs either, so no personality fits the bill perfectly.
Sorry if I sound like a broken record too ...

But the Bond of the books was a pretty funny guy .... not stand-up funny, but he usually had a sardonic, wry point of view.

Also, Fleming had fund poking fun at him. Example : YOLT ...
Tiger is taking Bond to dinner, and the lobster crawls off Bond's plate.

"My God, Tiger! I'ts alive!"

And Tiger goes on to berate him, "Really, Bondo san, you must get over your Western sqeemishness." (or something like that).

To me, that's splitting the sides funny.

And then again, Bond has genuine affection for his friends. This is reciprocated... again, see Tiger's reaction when Bond changes in seeing the photo of Blofeld. Tiger is shocked to see his quote "friend" unquote who has been for the past month a likeable, funny guy morph into a cold avenger.
You move very well for a dead man, Mr Bond
Kill him!

Yuyp! A Bond near the end of his life (or Fleming's life). Check out his very last novel too - TMWTGG. Bond is even more mellow than this.

Whereas you check out the earlier novels, Bond is hardly Charlie Chaplin.

So are you saying Bond never looked dangerous, menacing, threatening in the novels then.......
If you're talking about menacing characterization, there's no problem. But when talking about the looks, it's a different matter. Like I've said earlier when he looks like that he would not pass off as a spy...
BOND sells, NOT CRAIG
The reboot is a risky area, did Eon need to do it? NO. Did this confuse alot of people? YES.
The Bond character will always be anchored in the values of the 60s

I keep forgetting that spies are supposed to look more like GQ male fashion catwalk models, and not ordinary looking folk that could blend in easily......

Well it doesn't also mean he must look like a musclebound killer...

In the book Fleming describes Bond as having movie star good looks. so if Bond doesn't blend in, it's only because his creator didn't really make him sound like someone who would.

This argument swings both ways. So Craig doesn't have movie star good looks now? I guess neither did Steve McQueen.

well, I guess if you find Steve McQueen Bond material, that's your opinion, but I don't see it that way.

I'm referring the McQueen comparison to Bond looking like a movie star - which McQueen does.

I can't argue that McQueen is a movie star, but I doubt he's the one Ian Fleming had in mind.

I never really understood the Craig/McQueen comparison. Can you really compare the two?

Wouldn't McQueen have made a pretty good Felix Leiter?

The trouble with McQueen being Leiter would be that he was too big a star to take a supporting role like that.
If he could've it would most likely have been a great combination.
Connery and McQueen...wow!
