GoldenEye 10th Greatest Game

YEAR: 1997 FORMAT: NINTENDO 64

When Empire reviewed GoldenEye 007 back in the day, we only gave it four stars because it was unthinkable that James Bond could die. Now, over a decade later, we're still repenting our sins. A genuine classic that introduced stealth, sniping and scintillating style to the familiar Doom template, GoldenEye 007 now stands as one of the most influential console blasters of all time, and a fan favourite for its delirious multiplayer mode where Jaws, Baron Samedi, Oddjob and a wealth of other Bond villains battled it out in a variety of exotic locations. Grenade Launchers in the Temple, anyone'?

Memorable for...
: Style. After blasting his way off a frigate packed with grenade-tossing enemy soldiers, Bond hurls himself into a waiting lifeboat - and casually checks his cufflinks before sailing to safety. Could they have captured the character's essence any more perfectly?

That's good news, this was an epic game. I used to play it all the time when I was younger.

Love this game!!!!!

If i had it now I take the kids and school them on how it supposed to be done :) Who am I kidding? After they learned the antique controls they would slaughter me

Wonderful game. One of the best and the most played of my wasted youth.

Chief of Staff, 007's gone round the bend. Says someone's been trying to feed him a poisoned banana. Fellow's lost his nerve. Been in the hospital too long. Better call him home.

God.... I had to be 13 maybe 12 when I first played it. Thing is we played it for years in the VS mode.

GoldenEye 007 not looking good for Wii or Xbox

Post by Blowfeld »

by Doug Aamoth on September 21, 2009

You guys sitting down? Bad news from The Internet!

Rare, the company behind GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64, basically said that the game will probably never be available for download on the Wii or Xbox 360.

Although there’s apparently been some back and forth in the way-distant past, Rare’s recent newsletter addresses a reader question concerning whether or not we’d ever see GoldenEye again.
The response:

“That was some time ago, my friend. Fate was against us that day. Destiny conspired to raise the hurdles even as we attempted to clear them, resulting in unpleasant groinal injury. I suspect we’re long past the stage where an agreement was on the cards, but you never know. Stranger things have happened… somewhere… probably.”
Ooh! Wait! “Stranger things have happened” means that everything will probably work out just fine, right? We’ll get GoldenEye on the Wii and/or Xbox 360 after all? No? Awww.

Groinal injury, indeed. I’d have shelled out 10 buckaroos for that one in a heartbeat.

A port of GoldenEye 007 still doesn't seem likely
17 hours ago - 8:20 AM on 09.21.2009, Brad Nicholson

The chance of a GoldenEye 007 revival via Xbox LIVE Arcade or Virtual Console appears no more feasible now than it was around a year ago. Speaking in response to a fan question about a port coming to either of those two downloadable platforms, a representative of Rare responded, largely, in the negative.
That was some time ago, my friend. Fate was against us that day. Destiny conspired to raise the hurdles even as we attempted to clear them, resulting in unpleasant groinal injury. I suspect we're long past the stage where an agreement was on the cards, but you never know. Stranger things have happened… somewhere … probably.
Licensing issues, naturally, have played a huge part in the still unfolding GoldenEye 007-to-downloadable-platforms drama. In August 2008, Rare’s Nick Burton said the problems weren’t on his studio’s end, rather, it was all Activision -- the license holder. "The ball's not in anybody at Rare's court, really," he said. “It's squarely in the license holders' court. It's a shame. It's kind of locked in this no man's land. There's nothing on LIVE Arcade, there's nothing on Wii."

At least Perfect Dark is coming, right?
