BFI to celebrate Bond producer

By Martin Hoscik · February 21, 2009

London’s BFI Southbank is to host a season of films to mark the centenary of film producer Albert R ‘Cubby’ Broccoli who, with Canadian producer Harry Saltzman, brought James Bond to the big screen. Outside the world of Bond, Broccoli formed Warwick Films with Irving Allen where he started his producing career.

The BFI has teamed up with Bond producers EON, now headed by Broccoli’s daughter Barbara and stepson Michael G. Wilson, for the season which will run throughout April and May.

Highlights of the season include a presentation of of the 007 classic From Russia With Love and The Red Beret, Broccoli’s first producing credit which features Alan Ladd as a Canadian who joins the British paratroopers in 1940.

There are also screenings of the Warwick Films production Fire Down Below which stars Rita Hayworth, Robert Mitchum and Jack Lemmon. Other Bond titles being screened include Dr No, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and The Living Daylights.

They weren't allowed to screw up the Cubby season at the BFI upon pain of death :P ...unlike what they've done with the Bond films as of late

I'm sure the Broccowilsons didn't make it easy for the BFI even though they weren't allowed to screw it up. :P

Cheers Captain! I'm tempted to pop along: it would be nice to see some of the older Bonds.
Bring back Bond!
