Roger Moore: 'Bond is too violent'

Sir Roger Moore has revealed that the portrayal of James Bond has become too violent for his tastes.

The 81-year-old actor played 007 in the 1970s and early 80s, but admitted that the bloodshed was already increasing by his seventh outing in A View To A Kill. "That wasn't Bond," he told The Telegraph.

Speaking after the release of latest instalment Quantum Of Solace, he said: "I am happy to have done it, but I'm sad that it has turned so violent. That's keeping up with the times, it's what cinema-goers seem to want and it's proved by the box office figures."

Quantum Of Solace broke UK box office records on its first day, making £4.9 million to beat the previous high of £4.03 million held by Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire.

Bond has always been violent. Moore's Bond films were no exception.I think Sir Rog is getting a bit senile

I honestly don't understand him. He seems to pride himself on carrying the roll for so long, but when you listen to him speak it's as if he doesn't really like the character.

007 has always been a character of the times. In the post 9/11 world we know the real bad guys aren't a bunch of mustache twirling baddies who want to hold the world for randsome. I'm not a huge fan of violence for violence sake. I was not a fan of Sin City. I understood what they were trying to do, but to me it was purely gratuitous. The early Connery films, before they started becoming campy like DAF, the films were very violent. FRWL is probably the best example.

Post 9/11 nothing.Bourne is pre 9/11 and that what they follow.Truly the cold war was the only death defying transition for Bond the rest is cosmetic changes.
I don't think much of the new baddies a weak ass weeping eye banker and some guy who is part lemur both with some of the dumbest wildest schemes since Wile E. Coyote and Cubby Broccoli fell out.The henchmen suck ass as too.I've seen better working the nightclub doors.

I think Sir Rog has a valid point. The un-necessary killing by Zorin in the mine (AVTAK) was out of touch with the rest of the film and his opinion of QOS is spot on. Bond shouldn't be thuglike.

"Too violent"? What a softy. I can imagine he would have had a heart attack if he saw Licence to Kill. This is one of the reasons I dislike Moore's take, he's got no edge, he's too soft, he lacks the steely toughness that Bond should always have.

At least Zorin was the villain. One of the things I dislike about Craig's take on Bond is his reckless disregard for innocent life, blowing up the embassy and half of Miami Airport in CR and apparently (though it was hard to tell what was going on) shooting a random woman in the crowd by mistake during the bullfight scene in QOS. Is this the same character who said (in TLD) "I only kill professionals"?

As much as I like most of Moore's Bond films, I still say he's off base on this one.

I agree about the Miami and Siena scenes. Rog's movies were just as violent,if not more so, though(it rhymes!)

Remember that Roger has worked for UNICEF for many years now. He's seen first hand evidence of the damage that mines and wars do to innocent children and civilians. It's understandable that his attitude to violence in films has been affected somewhat.

Exactly.Bond would never be that random.Someone like Mitchell would,though.

I can't buy the "Roger is the ambassador of UNICEF argument". I still think he's talking out of his backside

I think it is the UNICEF part of him speaking yet at the same time he never really was an enthusiast of the novels.

Since we're on the topic of Bond violence, the fight with Mr. Slate in QOS reminded me of this bit,

It was a part of his profession to kill people. He had never liked doing it and when he had to kill he did it as well as he knew how and forgot about it. As a secret agent who held the rare double-O prefix-the licence to kill in the secret service-it was his duty to be as cool about death as a surgeon. If it happened,it happened.

Slate pulled a knife on Bond so it was more than justified What I loved about that scene was we saw what Bond *didn't* see...Slate opening his knife and going after Bond..and yet Bond not knowing *exactly* where Slate was but being able to kill him-Spidey senses,perhaps?

I think Slate breaking through the window with the knife was enough to alert Bond's senses.
