Could Craig destroy the Bond franchise?

You are right about Bond evolving - but I don't really care for this stage of evolution!

Thanks Carl! As a casual bond fan (sorry) I was pretty taken aback by the strength of feeling in these forums - for and against. Makes for an interesting and entertaining read though! I can't help remembering how I felt (too) many years ago when I found out that they were making a new Star Trek series without kirk, and with some Baldy headed thespian. I was gutted and angry. Looking back though, I really prefer the 'The Next Generation' to the original. Can anyone, especially the more, adamant anti-craigers see themselves changing in this way? I'd be especially interested if anybody has had a change of heart after seeing the movie on DVD?

i can see myself dealing with the fact that Craig is the actor currently attached to playing James Bond, much in the same way that Steve Martin is attempting to be Clouseu. Doesn't mean that I find him to be appropriate in the role. I don't think Craig looks like James Bond, acts like James Bond, but sure he's got the role for now. ask me how I feel about him in the part, after his run is over, that's when I'll have a defintive opinion. as for now, I find him to be a decent actor, and enjoyed Layer Cake, but not a proper fit for James Bond. It's like when Nicholas Cage was signed on to play Superman. He's a good actor, and has been in some movies that I really enjoyed, but he does not look like Superman. Had that film been made, it would have been a very mixed bag for me, since it would have had someone who didn't fit the part.

Agreed. For Superman he has to have that certain look. However, James Bond's look has changed throughout the years and there really is no definitive look for him (except for the opinions of a vocal minority of course). Lazenby didn't resemble Connery for sure when he took the role. Connery to Moore was a giant leap not by how he played the role differently, but that he looked nothing like Connery at all. I don't remember Connery having a big jaw like Moore. Same thing happened once again from Moore to Dalton. The only transition I can think of, looks wise, that blended was from Dalton to Brosnan. They're the only two that actually looked alike. So from Brosnan to Craig shouldn't really be much of a shock considering the changes we have already seen. Thankfully, the general public have accepted Craig's Bond.

Lazenby got the job because he was (in looks) a Connery type. Brosnan and Dalton, like Connery and Lazenby were tall, dark and traditionally handsome, although slighter in build. Roger Moore was very handsome in his forties and 6'2. To my eyes Daniel Craig sticks out from the cinematic Bonds like a sore thumb.

Ah I see, trying to blend the predecessors all together with the vague description "tall dark and traditionally handsome" cliche. In the famous words of Roger Moore "So is my aunt."

Let's do an experiment. I call it the "Transitions of Bond"

Subject #1: Connery (DAF) to Moore (LALD)

Does this guy...

Resemble like this guy?

Of course not. However, the public accepted the drastic change in looks and personality for Bond 30 years ago, and they did once again with this guy...

Shall I put up Subject #2: Moore to Dalton?

I think Roger Moore was a bit of a departure (slighter, brownish hair etc) and played the character in a lighter manner but looks-wise I don't think it was a tremendous struggle in 1973 to fit him into the iconography of Bond in promos, stills, posters etc in the same way that it was with Craig sometimes.

yeah, the idea that Superman has a certain look and Bond does not is somewhat true. but the problem I have with Craig is that all the other Bonds were men who were handsome in the face, and Craig looks like Quark from "Star Trek -Deep Space Nine".

Back to topic: You may think he's ugly but the masses disagree. In my opinion, he's more ruggedly handsome like Sean Connery while all the rest were traditional Hollywood-type handsome. Fleming wasn't too kind to Sean Connery by saying he looked more like a milkman than the sophisticated secret agent. Connery with his skills and charisma had the writer eat his own words and he said nothing but good things for him after Dr. No. History repeated itself in 2006.

i'm not so sure the masses disagree. they may not object to him playing the part, but i've yet to meet a large number of women who find Craig to be that handsome. as for Connery's charisma, well it exceeds any of the other Bond actors by lightyears. and Craig has yet to display any real charm in the Bond role. mostly he's just sat around looking like hell and not saying much.

I guess it varies according to taste.
My sister-in-law works in an office full of women who have a nice big poster of Daniel Craig in the blue swim trunks hanging for all to see.
And you'd be amazed at how many not only think he's sexy, but went to see the movie on the strength of that image.

i just remember when "Casino Royale" came out, Daniel Craig was pictured on the front of USA Today. I picked it up and showed it to one of my female co-workers, and said,"does this guy look like James Bond to you?"
she replied, "I guess tall, dark and handsome is out, huh?"

There was an Irish girl I went to college with years ago. She used to be OBSESSED with Connery. And I mean obsessed. Worshipped the ground he walked on. I haven't seen her for a few years and then met up with her recently. Guess what. Connery is history. She now has a new male fantasy figure. You guessed it! Daniel Craig! I was suprised to see a huge close-up of him on her desktop PC, as I never thought she would ever get over her fad of Connery.

Looks like I was wrong!
