My short review

Post by carl stromberg »

I agree with many of the sentiments expressed in reviews, namely that this is a poorly put together film.

It's moderately entertaining as a by the numbers action movie with speedboat chases, fistfights, Bond driving speedboats into hotel rooms, fistfights on speedboats etc. The action is quite good, and the editing style loses focus on Craig a lot of the time, which means you can pretend he is not in the film. I did think he was the man in the sunglasses driving the lorry at one point in the PTS. It does seem a tad violent - the scene where Bond bursts into the flat and knifes someone after throwing him through 28 bits of glass for example. Craig is not a great action star. The likes of Jet Li, Jason Statham, Jean-Claude Van Damme can make daft action films because they are cult action stars. But Craig is not fun to watch, mainly because he is so humourless. He did make me laugh( unintentionally I presume) when he ripped off a door handle, and later on in the film, knocked out six MI6 minders in a lift - in two seconds whilst handcuffed! Ridiculous.

Some people go on on and on about the CGI parasurfing scene in Die Another Day. Let's hope they mention the awful scene where Bond parachutes out of a plane

The PTS was...a car chase. Not very exciting. The credits plus the awful song were uninspiring.

Olga was OK, although slightly wooden, and probably hampered by her role. Gemma was in the film for 38 seconds, probably included for marketing reasons. Jeffrey Wright is not my idea of Felix, but I would not mind if he got more than 2 minutes of screen time! Dench was OK in this one, and reminded me of the time they made Bond films. James said in his review that the MI6 HQ looks like the a deck from a Picard era Star Trek: I know what he means now!

Someone probably got paid a lot of money for coming up with the idea of the Quantum organisation. Almaric has the looks to be a Bond villian, but his character is terribly dull.

Some people suggest Craig is the new Connery. He is closer to Ivan Drago. His Bond is a scruffy thug, a hooligan. Craig overdoes the tough man act with his Bond - you feel like he is going to knife someone when he having a cup of tea. Does he have to do his mad face all the time? Lighten up a bit if you are going to make another. His Bond is so dull, and I'm sure it's because he is trying hard to portray Bond as a troubled hard man. This ruins the odd comical line he has - "she's seasick". Lighten up, and don't be so scruffy.

An average action film ruined by a dull leading man, and an extremely poor Bond film.
Bring back Bond!

I attended a showing about three weeks ago. I was already aware I wasn't going to care for it much from the reviews already out.

Whatever Quantum of Solace is it is not a Bond film. Regardless of the star the unfortunately named Quantum was destined to be a travesty.

If this is where Eon wants to take Bond I do wish they would hire Jason Statham, who is undoubtedly competent as a leading man and with the actions sequences. However not as Ian's 007 unfortunately that appears to be the primary requirement for these new 'Bond' films.

Never have I seen something so soulless. An abominable attempt to Americanize the franchise to the detriment of Ian's 007. In fact finally doing away with that pesky character altogether as well as the standards required to correctly portray him on the silver screen.

Eon has completely done away with the majesty of the 007 adventures. What remains in it's stead is a cacophony of second-rate action sequences birthed from a third-rate script. There may be role for which Daniel is unquestionably suited however this is not it.

Quantum has fantastic action that renders itself overdone and unbelievable. Poorly cast villains compounded by bad concepts which by all rights should not have been filmed.

Quantum is a film that should not have been made. The problems plaguing the unfortunately dubbed film were ones that were normally corrected in early production.

I salute those who continue to have faith in Eon after this unquestionable misfire.

Considering the new gritty realistic Bond we are now served, has anyone ever tried ripping a door handle off? not that you would. I bet Geoff Capes would struggle with that.

With practice and patience, maybe we could achieve that...
