Well, I know I shouldn't care what other people think, but it's generally considered one of the less popular films with the fans, so there's a certain sheepishness when I am forced to admit that actually, I quite liked it. And to be fair, I can see why other people don't - the production values (pretty poor by Bond standards), the crocodile-jumping scene, Sheriff J.W. Pepper and so on.Skywalker wrote:LALD should not be a guilty pleasure.

The for and againt crowd take the gloves off for a second to agree, that Moonraker is indeed an enjoyable Bond filmcarl stromberg wrote:You would have to have a heart of stone not to enjoy Moonraker.
Moonraker was the first Bond film I saw in the cinema, when I was 12. I enjoyed it then, but it's my least favourite Bond film now. With double-taking pigeons and the whole "Jaws finds love" subplot, I just want Graham Chapman to walk on in army uniform shouting "stop this film - it's silly!"carl stromberg wrote:You would have to have a heart of stone not to enjoy Moonraker.

#1 From Russia W/ Love - Realistic spy story-cool settings and characters. Simply the essence of the Cold War. Best effort by far in my book. The Bulgarians, Spectre, the Russians- has it all...
#2 Goldfinger- Aston Martin DB5. "Do you expect me to talk?" "No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!" Gold paint that is stuck in your mind forever. Great Swiss settings and Bernard Lee is fantastic (the bank dinner sequece).
#3 OMHSS-Super cool period piece-captured eesence of late 60"s. Diana Rigg (nuff said). -Unfortunate that Connery not in-However, underrated performance by Lazenby-who does an yeoman's job with it--face it no matter who follows Connery is bound to be trashed by public. Savalas a good Blofeld, and although the "doom" aspect of the plot weak, the movie is a technicolor imprint of the era-obviously one of the models for Austin Powers. It's just cool.
#4 Dr. No (Yes the "dragon" is silly) But has Playboy club and first: "Bond"..."James Bond", Ruthless bond as well : "You've had your six" and he plugs the prof. Set the tone for Connery Bond. Jack Lord perfect as Leiter.
#5 Casino Royale: Yep, despite some of the tedious portions, still a return to what should have been all along-and a welcome lack of the silly gadgets, computer effects, over the top plots, and invisible cars that have marred recent offferings. Weak Leiter though. Craig is fine overall, if not a tad bit stiff-again the follower of the popular Brosnan apt to be scrutinized to the nth degree.
#6 Thunderball. Cool settings,(lousy Felix Leiter) the best SPECTRE portrayal. Cool underwater fight. Connery has grown into the part. The beginning O.K., but Connery at the spa makes the movie-a great mixture of seriousness with the right doses of humor and exoctic locales.
#7 For Your Eyes Only: The only Moore film I care for much. Towards the end Moore became a caricature of Bond--and was cast for far too long. Anyhow-this is the last one he should have done--not over the top, a decent spy story, with some silliness, but minimal compared to others. An attempt to return the fundamentals.
#8 You Only Live Twice. A bit high on the gadget side--and the "hidden" volcano lair is a tad much, but the formula and exotic locales mixed with Asian culture give it the right feel for a Bond movie. Connery showign his age just a bit.
#9 The Living Daylights. Dalton is an excellent choice. Although Joe Don Baker a buffoon. The opening sequence is cool, and dalton tries to bring an intensity and realism to an O.K. story. A movie that played well at first viewing, but slows ion DVD-to a point where you might skip a few scenes here and there. Another attempt to bring the franchise back to some sort of realistic plot.
10) Goldeneye. The only Brosnan on here --but NOT because of Brosnan. Brosnan-had he been given a fighting chance-i.e. story, script, and direction -could have been the best Bond ever. Unfortunately, his arrival coincided with the decent of the franchises' storylines, and the (over done) ascent of the computer effects era. He was the right guy at the wrong time. One might argue that Brosnan was wasted as Remington Steele, and by the time he arrived, he had to prop the franchise. This meant that not only did the producers have to play up Brosnan (to his detriment), but tried to go well "over the top" to make his film as fantastic as possible. "Keep It Simple Stupid is a well used remark and it applies here. The opening sequence was a great introduction for Brosnan--the film was O.K. and brought the franchise back to the fore. Unfortunately-mostly downhill from there.
Those who are angry that Brosnan was dropped should be far more angry at what he was forced to play to when he was in. Frankly Craig is the one who took the gamble in my opinion, and so far so good. he is not classic in terms of looks, but is a good actor-albeit rough around the edges. Given time AND the proper script/screenplay-he should be just fine.
My opinions of course.

This is very true and I think that the whole of OHMSS is an extremely overrated Bond film by the fans.Skywalker wrote:I posted earlier that OHMSS was one of my fav's. I actually watched it again last night and was slightly disappointed. I can't put my finger on one particular reason it just did not meet up to expectation.
Also, does anyone agree that the opening fight scene on the beach reminded them of early 'BATMAN' fight scenes. All that was missing was the captions: POW; CLUNK etc....
It's certainly not the cult classic of the series that many claim.
It has a terrible cast, no Bondian or true romantic atmosphere and is just so cheesy in a lot of ways
Lazenby is a poor man's James Bond, Diana Rigg is a good actress but is totally unsuited to the role of Tracy, Savalas is Blofeld in the style of an American gangster. No good!
The story and Barry's score on the other hand are of course excellent, but the director made a mess of this film's potential.
My favourite Bonds are FRWL and Thunderball. Dr No, Goldfinger and The Living Daylights are also quite good. True classics!
Casino Royale was dull and stupid, Craig was terrible too!

That's right, I only like some of the films. So not a fan of the whole series then?
The early ones Dr No to Thunderball, and The Living Daylights.
The Moore Bonds were too much comedy and every film after TLD has been a failure in my opinion.
I actually wouldn't mind if they put this series to rest.
And what's the point in making a Bond film like Casino Royale that has none of the old Bondian touches? A film that was suppossed to be some kind of Bond begins, but didn't feel like it at all.
And with a new James Bond who runs around like some kind of Terminator and looking nothing like Bond should.
