Problem with following up your fist Bond movie is that Pierce, Seans & Roger made it look easy.Expectations are high.
Thats is so true Oscatheman! that is where Craig fails!! I watched Tomorrow Never Dies yesterday, ok not the strongest Bond movie but Brosnan had charisma in spades and made it look easy, i didnt appreciate how good he was until i saw Quantum of Souless aka The Bourne Minicry aka chimp on parade aka Chav Bond. :D

I see from the news today that QOS set a new UK BO opening weekend record in £,
but the figure is not quite so impressive when converted to US $ as the £1 = $1.6 approx.

When CR was playing the £ was worth nearly $2........the reason i mention this is that as
the film world specifies a films success in US $ then QOS will have its work cutout to make a
similar amount to CR.

It looks like initially QOS will take huge BO takings on its initial release, but i will be interested to see
how the film performs in following weeks. I now don't expect the film to be in cinemas as long.

What really annoys me with the producers, is that they had found a good balance of tone in CR!

From that QOS should of been at least as good, and it could of been and should of been as good as CR.
I, like some others here like the current approach to Bond.....................but what i didn't like was how
the finished article turned out in QOS.

1/ The producers must forget about 'Bourne'....fuzzy wuzzy camera work does not suit a Bond film.

2/ I got the impression that the producers thought that making the action scenes fast and giddy like Bourne
then the film would appeal more to American audineces, where Bourne had proved successful at the BO, and
hence similar rewards would come to Bond if they followed the same style (and they may do).

3/ The editing of the film was horrendous in places (many people have commented on this), basically
it undermines all the hardwork, technicians and stuntmen had put into the film during production.

4/ The pace of the film particularly at the beginning of the film was way to fast, not allowing the audience
to absorb or make sense of whats going on.

5/ Whats, frustrating is that QOS looked liked it was going to be a cracker after filming had finished, but
was botched up in post-production. This can be seen, in that there are some great scenes in the film, but
others are a mess.

6/ I heard that Forster wanted the film to go like a bullet.............but what he forgot was that there would be
millions of people going to the cinema, to sit back, relax and enjoy the film rather than being confused.

7/ I know there are deadlines to be met, and the editing time is short, but previous Bond directors and editors
have also had the same timeframe to work in, and have still given us a watchable film.

Sum up.............after the critical and commercial success of CR........i was really looking forward to QOS,
and it saddens me to say that the end result is a poorly executed film.......
not so much in the film itself and the acting which was good.............but the poor technical work of assembling the whole piece.

When i see the film again, i should probably enjoy it more........picking up on pieces i missed first time around, but i just wished they had made the film a little longer, extending some of the action scenes in particular.

This is one unusual film, and there doesn't seem to be much of a middle ground, you'll either love it or hate it.

Well in fact, as most of the people on this site dont approve of DC, then there's no way you people will like this film, as surprisingly from my point of view DC was very good in the film!!

QOS is a good film, but it was a big missed opportunity, and unfortunately some bad word of mouth will affect
its later BO.........but we will see.

I hear from MW that he's going to assemble a writing team for Bond 23 in January 2009.
Well from a film making point of view i hope he does these things.

a/ Hire a director who understands how to film action scenes as well as drama.

b/ Hire editors that dont butcher a film

c/ Forget the 'jerky' filming, and go back to conventional filming techniques.

d/ Actually try to have a decent script completed before filming (the same thing happened on TND, when
PB mentioned to the press that the script was 's**t')

d/ Think of the people who will be watching this film.

e/ QOS just does enough not to damage the franchise, but neither does it do any good

Blimey........i went on a bit there, but the points are valid, and it pains me to write these things.

That's why the publicity went all-out for a big opening weekend (though this is quite normal for a big"tentpole" pic) - they're afraid of how front-loaded this pic is going to be, in contrast to CR, which performed fairly sluggishly at first, but picked up momentum later on.

Well it does make the take in the UK a little less impressive, down about .40 from 2 years ago.
I don't know if that matters as Sony will be collecting all the funds and doubt if they transfer will it all to £

It's not going to do Great US BO, it's going to be top heavy release helped out greatly by all the free tickets, dying down as more interesting films come out. Bad word of mouth is going to neutered it before the US release date.

CR was the same love it or hate it. The US is going to be a problem for it, Craig wasn't that impressive to audiences here. Several elements of the film didn't do as well here even though the US audience was pandered to with many of the changes.

Problematic for the entire new Bond series is a majority of (US) audiences didn't feel Craig was Bond at the end of CR and most weren't entirely convinced CR was a Bond film. As always I put a disclaimer to that statment; this does not mean they do not like Craig or the movie.
A strange disconnect where people feel if you don't hate/loathe Craig you there for support him -this from the point of view from this site (site's past anyway).

Quark needed to cement Craig as Bond and affirm his direction, Quark fails to make him Bond and takes him further from it. A very bad mistake in my estimation. I feel the initial acceptance of CR was becasue it was supposed to be a exception to the rule and the franchises was supposed to get back to business with the next film. Unfortunately they went back to business with the wrong spy series!

What remains to be seen is if the traditional Bond fans where consistently attend the movies will do so again. In the US they didn't last time, a little more than 2 million didn't attend CR.
If the general Bond fan feeling is less than enchanted with Craig's glum Bond the BO take will be poorer than I estimated.

I respect your review/views although I disagree with your assessment of Craig. Thank you for giving us a in depth and interesting review/analysis.

You left out one important point Arthur: f)Get rid of Craig and this reboot concept once and for all. It is refreshing to see a Pro-Craigite such as yourself have the b---s to admit this film is basically a Bond exercise in Eon ineptitude, unlike the Sweenster, who is way out there on the Bond/Bourne cutting edge fringe of Craig euphoria. We said it months back, and it looks like we will be correct with this pile of Bourne rubbish opening big, then fading into the sunset of box office obscurity as compared to CR. It is evident now that Craig/Eon/Haggis and Sony cannot stand on their originality. Time for them to regroup.

So because The Sweeney doesn't sit in the same camp as you bj, he has no balls? Surely the Sweenster has his own opinion. I'd say he's got that right, and you might even say he's got the balls to say he enjoyed it, and has reasons why.

You also predicted that CR would flop, and Craig would be a one film Bond bj. Don't put all your eggs in one basket just yet as to the fate of QOS. You don't want egg on your face do you?
I'll post a review the second I've seen the film, and made my own mind up.
I'm looking forward to QOS maybe even more than CR, as it has got so many mixed reviews. I realise that you and katied have made up you minds already, so really is there any point in either of you discussing it anymore? Why would I waste my time discussing something with two people who have an opinion on a film they've yet to see?
Though I do have a strange likeness for ya bj. The place just wouldn't be the same without you.

I thnk they struggled coming up with a plot and with the script. So the film is a bit of a muddle: but I'll only know that after I've watched the film.

I thought Brosnan could save a by the numbers Bond with his wonderful perfomances - such as in Die Another Day. I wonder if this has happened with QOS? It could be a mess of a film, but some fans are so in love with Craig's new "Bond" character that they found themselves enjoying the film.

Wonderful performances...such as DAD.
I'm curious. What about Brosnan's performance in DAD was wonderful?
I'd say it was his absolute worst take on Bond. A smarmy playboy who walks into hotels in pj's looking like a hobo.
Surfing into North Korea. Where did he come from to surf into the coast like that?
Failing to spot an obvious traitor within his own department. Failing to see his gun wasn't loaded.
Brosnan was better in GE and TWINE.
TND has its moments, but DAD was just a bad film. To much of a mess on all counts. Bad Bond, bad Bond girl, bad baddies. DAD was bad.

I agree with James Page, one of the main figures behind the MI6 fan forums who said this about Brosnan in Die Another Day:

"Pierce Brosnan - James Bond 007: Brosnan strengthens his grip on the Bond character as he looks completely comfortable playing the suave spy. The perfect blend of Connery's danger, Moore's flippancy and Dalton's intensity are perfectly balanced, with Brosnan also adding a deeper persona to the flawed man.
5/5".
