Yeah, The Avengers was quite fun, but it seems unjust that it grossed over a billion dollars while the far superior John Carter tanked.Dr. No wrote:We watched John Carter tonight got to say Disney messed up if they made 10 more JC movies I'd buy them.
IMO it is better than Avatar a better more original story than the SW prequels. It's a little clunky at aometimse but the story is good the acting is good I almost feel as if there should be a extended cut of the movie. Far from being the worst thing from Disney in years it one of the better movies they have made. No where near as bad as the Disney Nicolas Cage movies not Nation Treasure.

Moonrise Kingdom, the newest Wes Anderson movie(he also directed The Royal Tenenbaums ). Good stuff, and his taste in music is impeccable.

Yes, it will need my help as part of the plan to drive Bond 23 from entering this year's top 10 list of grossing films (both worldwide and in the US). And it will need BJ's help also.Omega wrote:But but but . Prometheus needs your help!![]()

There's no doubt Madagascar 3 will surpass the $600 million, and I hope I'm right. I hope there's enough blockbusters to drive Bond 23 off this year's top 10 list of grossing films even if they don't pass $600 million, but I would assume most will pass that mark.Omega wrote:Will it did well enough didn't it.FormerBondFan wrote:Yes, it will need my help as part of the plan to drive Bond 23 from entering this year's top 10 list of grossing films (both worldwide and in the US). We are going to see Madagascar some time in the next few weeks maybe the 4th weekend.

Re: The Last Movie You Watched
Finally saw No Country for Old Men. One problem i don't see Skyfall having that the other two BoBo films had is a bland villain. Javier Bardem was deeply scary in that film.

Why not this weekend? Brave is out next week. I would see M3 before the upcoming Pixar film. We need enough movies to fill up this year's top 10 grossing films (both worldwide and here in the US), kicking Bond 23 out. It would take more than just Katniss, Avengers, the Bat, vampires, and the Hobbit to do all this work.Dr. No wrote:We are going to see Madagascar some time in the next few weeks maybe the 4th weekend.

Re: The Last Movie You Watched
There's also new Spider-man and Ice Age movies, remakes of Total Recall and Red Dawn and, um, a new Bourne movie, though it's probably best if that isn't a success.FormerBondFan wrote:Why not this weekend? Screw the new Bourne movie. I'll definitely rent it though. My money's on the Bat, which I still considered it escapism despite being grim and realistic.Kristatos wrote:There's also new Spider-man and Ice Age movies, remakes of Total Recall and Red Dawn and, um, a new Bourne movie, though it's probably best if that isn't a success.FormerBondFan wrote:Why not this weekend? And there's Rise of the Guardians, Les Miserables, Jack Reacher, and many others. Speaking of Rise of the Guardians, it releases on Wednesday of Thanksgiving, and the $145 million budget, I think it's a suicide to release on the week after the vampire horde takes over. However, there's always families taking kids to the movies, and it would make sense to have Guardians released that week, giving the advantage to destroy Bond 23. Looking at last Thanksgiving week, there were 3 blockbusters: Arthur Christmas, Hugo, and The Muppet. Since those movies were released after the vampires' entrance, neither of them reached the #1 status. Now this Thanksgiving, we got Rise of the Guardian (like I just said), Life of Pi, Red Dawn, and The Silver Linings Playbook. It would be nice if one of these four pushes up on the 9th.
Now to Les Miserables. Why would someone put this on the same day as The Hobbit? It's suicide if you ask me. Afterall, Mamma Mia released on the same the day as the Bat's round 2, and it end up in 2008's top 10 grossing films worldwide, not to mentioned beating QOS' numbers. Whether Les Miserables will end up in the top 10, we will see.
BJ and Kris, any thoughts here?

Re: The Last Movie You Watched
I was confining myself to movies that I thought stood a realistic chance of being in the year-end top 10 of movies. The only one of the movies you mention that I think has a chance is Les Mis, because the musical it was based on is enormously popular. But then, so is Phantom of the Opera, and I don't think the movie of that was exactly a blockbuster. In adjusted dollars, only three live-action musicals since 1974 have made over $200 million at the box office - Grease, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Chicago, though the number 4 musical, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas would have made enough money to enter the top 10 had it been released last year (source: Box Office Mojo).

Mamma Mia released during the summer and reached the top 10 in terms of worldwide numbers. And what about The Great Gatsby? Any chance for it to enter the top 10?

Re: The Last Movie You Watched
Not a chance. It opens Christmas Day, which means that only its first week's gross will get counted in the year-end totals, and no Baz Lurhmann film has ever made more than $100 million at the US box office, even when adjusted for inflation. This one has a certain advantage due to topicality, with a lot of people saying that we are returning to the world depicted in the source novel (with corruption in high places and a yawning chasm between rich and poor), but I don't know that's going to translate to vast box office numbers. I suspect that, like his Romeo & Juliet, the core audience is going to be high schoolers who are studying the source material in English Lit classes.FormerBondFan wrote:Mamma Mia released during the summer and reached the top 10 in terms of worldwide numbers. It would be nice if your friend Judge Dredd make it to the top 10 but no chance.

Re: The Last Movie You Watched
Nah, I don't think so either. There's a reason the film only got a $45 million production budget. As an R-rated action movie based on a character who is virtually unknown in the States, there's a ceiling on expectations, as they say.FormerBondFan wrote:It would be nice if your friend Judge Dredd make it to the top 10 but no chance.

I watched the biopics of famous French criminal Jacques Meserine (Death Instinct and Public Enemy no1). He was an interesting man and it was a fun gangster movie.
