MGM had a conference call this week in which it said a) Bond movies will come out on a 3-4 year cycle and b) "there's no rush" in striking a new 007 distribution deal.

A) isn't that much of a surprise but it drives the final nail in the coffin of the idea (presented when MGM was in bankruptcy) that Bond movies would resume an every-other-year schedule.

Napoleon Solo wrote:"Insiders" may consider the next movie a special event. Fans refer to the movie as Bond 25 simply because it has been titled yet. But does anyone think being the 25th movie automatically gives the film a special status. It's like they keep hoping the 50th anniversary publicity will generate itself all over again.
You're take the word right out of my mouth Napoleon! Nobody cares what number in the series a film falls in, the only reason "Bond 20" (DAD) was a big deal was it also fell on the 40th anniversary. TSWLM wasn't a big deal because it was "Bond 10" nor TLD because it was "Bond 15" as you say they're just trying to recapture the lightning in a bottle from SF by drumming up false excitement.

Veronica wrote: ...the question is who will be hired this time. And if they are going to continue this reboot "realistic" approach or turn back to the Bond formula.I say that's unlikely with Barbara and co. in charge.
At the risk of sounding like one of FBF's prerecorded responses, whomever plays Bond next is irrelevant. It all depends on what they blame for SP's under performance. (SP's 800 mil. and change is nothing to sneeze at, but you know they were expecting much, much more considering they bribed their golden boy Mendes back) Will they blame the "Bond elements" they included this time around (with neolithic incompetence I might add) or the "deep" "emotional" psyco-drama they've managed to once again shoehorn in to an espionage action adventure film. Much like groundhog day if they blame the former (which I suspect they will) we're in for 7 more years of "entertainment winter" if the later, maybe, just maybe we'll get a Bond worth watching again.

Lots of people are throwing out their money on this Superman trash. They front loaded the international releases as EON did with ECH-TRE, releasing it in China, Japan, etc., before word of mouth further destroys it. I give it 3 weekends before the severe fall off at the box office.

A direct comparison can be made with this Sup V. Bat film and Bond, in that the characters will draw the cash despite the product quality. You could show a man in a cape, cowl, or tux watch grass grow for 2 hours, slap the name Superman, Batman, or Bond on it and people will show up to see it.

The aid of Good Friday crowds certainly played a role in the strength of opening day for the hugely anticipated superhero showdown, but unfortunately, word of mouth is proving to be a struggle so far following poor critical reviews. The studio reports a concerning "B" CinemaScore from audiences, while Flixster audiences have given it a 73 percent rating as of Saturday morning (comparing to 90 percent for Ultron through the same point)............No one else put up much of a fight against the onslaught of Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice at the global box office. The film launched in 66 markets this weekend, finishing its first frame with $254 million overseas.

China led all international markets with a $57.3 million haul from approximately 16k screens, making it the biggest WB opener of all time in the market. The UK finished the weekend with $21.9 million, the biggest March opener of all time in the market.

The weekend's other top performers include: Mexico ($18.6M), Brazil ($12.2M), South Korea ($10.5M), Australia ($10M), Russia ($8.5M), France ($8.4M), Germany ($8.2M), Spain ($6.3M), Italy ($5.8M), and Japan ($4.4M).

Warner Bros. is reporting the following overseas records:

• Biggest Superhero opening weekend of all time
• All time biggest March opening
• WB's biggest opening of all-time in China
• WB's biggest IMAX opening of all time
• 2nd biggest WB int'l opening of all-time (behind HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2)
• Biggest opening for a Ben Affleck film
• Biggest opening for a Zack Snyder film
• Biggest opening for a Henry Cavill film

Batman vs. Superman finished its first weekend with a $424.1 million global haul.

Here in the UK this week, on the Graham Norton show, which had the stars of the new Bat vs Superman film, there was quite a bit of discussion with Henry Cavill regarding the Bond role, and he said he would more than likely take the job if offered the role, as he seemed to want the job. Trouble is that, as he acknowledges, being Superman, and committed to further roles in the Superman franchise would likely rule him out of the Bond gig.

BOM:From an audience perspective, Batman v Superman received a so-so "B" CinemaScore with a "B-" coming from males, which made up 62% of the audience, and "B" from females. Audience members under the age of 18, however, scored it an "A-", which brings our attention to next weekend. Recent films such as Avengers: Age of Ultron and Batman v Superman predecessor Man of Steel saw 59.4% and 64.6% second weekend drops respectively. It's also worth noting a large drop should be expected no matter what, if only because $27.7 million of Batman v Superman's opening came from Thursday previews.

From a historical perspective, a second weekend drop around 62% is a safe bet at this time, and anything better than 60% would show the film is holding well in the face of odds that would otherwise suggest it was in trouble over the long run. Speculation aside, it won't be until we see how far it drops that we can get a good grasp on just how big it may go, but its success doesn't rely wholly on its domestic prospects as it also got off to a very strong start overseas.

Kingsman 2 lock and load. The traditional tall and dark-haired James Bond's time is over. This is the closest we can get to that.

Actuals are in at $166,007,347 for Super-trash, $4 million below estimates, and below HP too. Now let's get a 68% drop off next weekend and that should wrap it up.

FBF, will you fly to the UK to see this? -------The Eighth Story. Nineteen Years Later.

Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany, a new play by Jack Thorne, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - Parts I & II (Special Rehearsal Edition): The Official Script Book of the Original West End Production is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. The play will receive its world premiere in London’s West End on July 30, 2016.

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

I don't have the monetary resource for that, but I'll buy the play and see the film version if there should be any.

More importantly, it only got a B- on Cinemascore. That may not sound as bad, but IIRC, Cinemascore actually polls people as they're coming out of the cinema, when you'd expect enthusiasm to be at its highest, so its ratings tend to be generous. Anything less than an A is considered poor.

I think the drop off in the projected total is the start of the word of mouth killing the bo.
Funny how dc fans no matter if they are Craig fans or dc comics go nuts attacking detractors.

Weird thing was one place had university staff defending BvS as deep , everyone else was kind of pissed at how crap it was.

But WB/dc sold the golden match up fans have dreamed of seeing and f'ed it up trying to set up the sequels more than concentrating on the story. Also why I feel age of altron failed.

Correction, it was a B, not a B-. Still not good, though.

The Cinemascore rating won't change, as their whole MO is to poll the people who paid to see the film at the cinema on opening night. That's why a B rating is such a bad sign for the film. It represents the average rating of those who would have been most jazzed to see it. That's why A and A+ ratings are the norm there.
