It may well be a shameless attempt to generate column inches, but one U.K. bookmaker has, out of the blue, slashed its odds of Homeland star Damian Lewis being named the next James Bond.
William Hill revealed on Monday that it had dramatically dropped Lewis' price from an outsider 25/1 to near-favorite 3/1, just short of hot tip Idris Elba, currently 5/2, and putting the actor firmly in contention ahead of Tom Hardy (4/1), Henry Cavill (5/1) and Michael Fassbender (7/1).
“This is an unprecedented gamble, as for no apparent reason we have seen bets of up to £200 [$312] on Damien Lewis being named as the next Bond. This could well be significant and might herald the end of Daniel Craig as the world’s most famous spy,” said a spokesperson.
Lewis has previously hinted at his desire to play the famed superspy, joking in 2013 that the Scottish heritage outlined in Skyfall had “paved the way perfectly for a red-headed Bond.”

So going from a blond with a head like a lemon to a ginger who looks like he's sucking on one, is that a step in the right direction? I will say a least judging by the photo, he seems to be able to display that swagger that has been sorrily lacking over the last decade.

Bear in mind that this rumour is based on nothing more than a bookie deciding to slash the odds for reasons undisclosed. It could be because of an insider tip, but it's just as likely to be because someone knew that it would be a good way to get their name in the papers during the summer silly season. If nothing else, it gives William Hill some free advertising.

I like Damian as a actor. Primarily from Band of Brothers and Life. Back when Casino was fresh people kept comparing Daniel to Steve MCQueen. A part from the obvious aping of McQueen's looks, complete with spray tan (By this the way the third attempt to make Daniel palatable to the action audience), I didn't see it. I did see how Damian was a closer substitute/ similar looking actor to Steve.
I am not sure how he would be as 007, he may not even be on the radar of the people doing the casting. I am not even sure the casting speculation at this point is worth much, unless Daniel intends to quit. I guess industry insiders would be aware of the studio trying to quietly find a replacement.

Babs talks about "striking screen presence and charisma"of Craig... he is also a combination of "movie star and great actor"...a MOVIE STAR?Where was he again? And how with Skyfall they went back to "more character drive stories and less gadgets" of Connery era. I never saw Connery movies as something character-driven-and those movies were GREAT. Again,we have the talk of Bond girl being "Strong"-don't we listen that same story since FOREVER?"
Babs confirms who runs this franchise now-Craig.So,huh,he just called Mendes himself and asked him if he wanted to direct a movie...Babs just screamed "YES!" to that...and so on...
I wanted HENRY CAVILL.
And many others with you, even on forums that are now filled with Craig fanboys.

Too old.
It's not about age. It's that he's red headed, not handsome or anything that James Bond should br.Plus he's not likeable AT ALL imo. Really antipatico(opposite of likeable)
I think Damien Lewis is an excellent actor and can play the action hero... as he proved in Homeland. Except he played a crazy one, not James Bond. He doesn't have any of the attributes Bond has. Non lo trovo antipatico, but that's not the point (that was for you Veronica) He is just completely inadequate in terms of type for the role. AL Pacino is a great actor but he should never be Bond. Same for De Niro and same for Damien Lewis. But this thing is based on NOTHING but bookmakers, so it truly has no credibility.

Let Damien be the next Bond. What Bond should look like is no longer relevant.

Barbara Broccoli's insanity is once again on public display. The Mirror has an article claiming that she's a big fan of Damien Lewis and, supposedly, she's been chasing the actor for 18 months:
"But James Bond movie boss Barbara Broccoli was telling executives 18 months ago that English gent Damian, 44, who starred as Heny VIII in Wolf Hall, has the potential to play the upper-crust spy."
So this is yet another example of her vision of Bond. The woman, more than ever, is a pure loony tune. But at the rate she's degenerating, it won't surprise me if she ends up casting Kevin James or David Spade as Bond.
