Superman was a good Fathers Day film, if only because both set of parents were so important in forming the man Clark was to become. Johnathan Kent and Jor-el sacrificed themselves for the child because of their love for him and also their faith in who the child could become. Sappy I know but consider the day  Also having young Superman wailing on a Zod for threatening him mom was a guilty pleasure just because it fit the corn fed all American boy image I have of Clark.

Personally I'd rather watch Superman and Superman 2 with my kids I doubt they'd enjoy it half as much the new movie. I like the new actor, I miss the feel of the early movies and TV shows in Black and White. It had a more Smallville feel which was good and bad. The tone of the movie I didn't find too serious it was about how Clark wanted to not take up the mantle of power he was destine to and live in the background of humanity our failings and triumphs, fate forced the issue leading to his having to find the core in his being to be the man he should. I couldn't watch Superman returns another time I could watch this but rather watch the original movie.

What Sweeney said about the SFX was so true it was geared to the ADHD video game death and mayhem crowd. On the other hand I remember some criticizing the Christopher Reeve for taking the action too far and glorifying it.

Zod vs Zod I'd pick Terence Stamp (who was Jor-el's voice in Smallville) besides the new Zod looked like a billy goat on steroids.
[spoil]Image
Image[/spoil]

Superman vs Superman Christopher Reeve but the new guy is not bad either, both would fly off to beat up Routh together.

Lois Lane vs Lois Lane, Teri Hatchet, only joking if TV were included Noel Neill would have to get a shout out. Out of movie Lois Lanes Margot Kidder takes the prize. I do consider the Kents of the new movie believable although if they have a superpowered son why hasn't he painted the farmhouse and done a few chores to help his poor mother out more.
I guess this movie will be one of these generational things where kids and young adults raised in a world were true skill in filming hasn't been evident for almost 30 years, any half way decent story with great FX is acceptable and better than the average movie. Although IMO all the critics who praised superman returns and dare to criticize this need to turn in their press credentials, in fact critics may be even more out of touch than I have suppsoed for the last few year nobody leaving this movie nobody anywhere near me was disappointed in it. I had my own opinions based on a longer movie going history than most of the audience I'd imagine, this was not the let supreme down Superman Returns was, this was fun and maybe not following the original outline about Krypton is more upsetting to some I enjoyed it although still miss some of touched the original story had.

BTW downing a drone is going to make Superman a American Hero, and if they were still selling Truth Justice and the American way, Superman would have to fly to congress arrest all of them and then disassemble the NSA and CIA by hand. :?

I personally quite enjoyed it, and didn't really understand all the negativity, but I'd hardly call the fourth film in a series that began in 1981 (and which was conceived of as a deliberate throwback to the old Republic movie serials) original.

It wasn't all that original either, it ripped off a many low budget scifi movies and TV shows like Stargate SG1. Indy jumped the shark not because Harrison Ford was too old and the son was miscast but because the story at its heart was unworthy of the early movies even the hit and miss Young Indy adventures. I could agree on some better points of the movie but the ending was unsatisfying and felt way out of place IMHO.

In need of a major franchise to fill the void left by Harry Potter and The Dark Knight, Warner Bros. put their all in to making sure Man of Steel was a hit. As far as franchise reboots go, they started in a good place: while Superman is immensely popular, audiences have largely forgotten about Superman Returns, and therefore Man of Steel never faced the same kind of skepticism that surrounded The Amazing Spider-Man last year.

From there, the movie itself wound up being extremely marketable, and the Warner Bros. team pushed on all the right buttons over the past few months. Producer Christopher Nolan and director Zack Snyder both have an established track record with comic book material, and their association was a major part of the advertising. It was also made clear that this was an origin story—no prior knowledge needed—that had high stakes and a strong focus on character. Finally, the strong visuals and hints of large-scale action sealed the deal. With all of these qualities clearly on display in the previews, Man of Steel was able to transcend standard superhero movies and become a major movie-going event.
The critics may not have liked it much, and "Man of Steel" has just a 56 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But audiences -- which were 56 percent male and 62 percent over the age of 25 -- gave it an "A-" CinemaScore.
3D accounted for 41 percent of sales, which made this another unimpressive weekend for the format. Meanwhile, IMAX accounted for 12 percent—most of that is included in the 3D figure, though there were some IMAX 2D showings as well.

While critics weren't thrilled with Man of Steel—it's currently rotten on Rotten Tomatoes—audience for the most part seemed to dig it. With an "A-" CinemaScore suggesting solid word-of-mouth, Man of Steel should hang on well over the next few weeks. At this point, a final total north of $300 million is likely, while $350 million could also be doable. (If Boxofficemojo here is correct, it would surpass Bond 23's total in the USA :!: )

The ending was lacking Dr. No. It should have been better. Are you now saying Spielberg is ripping off other films too? If so, Hollywood is barren of any originality.

The first Superman movie in seven years, "Man of Steel" recorded the biggest opening by any movie in June, and its debut tops the openings of the previous five films in the franchise combined. But the importance of the $200 million co-production with Legendary Pictures goes beyond the box-office bounty for Warner Bros. Along with Batman, the Superman character is the lynchpin to the DC Comics superhero aggregation known as the Justice League.

The strong take-off by "Man of Steel" clears the way for Warner Bros. to kick-start a franchise based on those superheroes and villains, as Disney has with its Marvel Comics characters like "Iron Man" and "The Avengers."

"We already know a Superman sequel is in the works, but what fans truly crave is a Justice League of America movie," Exhibitor Relations vice president and senior analyst Jeff Bock told TheWrap. "Well, thanks to Superman successfully rebooting, it's much closer to a reality now than ever before. Watch out, Avengers, the battle for spandex domination has just begun!"

The studio wasn't talking specifics Sunday, but the potential was clear.

"The DC Comics brand is just great, and we have some options now," Warner Bros.' head of distribution Dan Fellman told TheWrap Sunday. "We'll see how we can build on this, but we're in a good spot."

Maybe not everyone, but there's a lot of buzz about a JLA movie.

I believe there would be a JLA movie. But, it wouldn't end up being good. Marvel movies are kinda in a "bright" universe, while the Nolan/DC universe are in a "dark" form (in soap opera way, disgusting), I don't think the JLA movie would end up being a success, I don't know though. I heard the script was in trouble a few weeks ago, who knows what would happen in the future? All I know is that the Nolan-esque style will be pasted over the material, and it will be another Dark Knight follow up. I wish Paul Dini and Bruce Timm get hired, scrap the script and write their own story. d**n, those pair know how to make a good product. Take Arkham Asylum and Arkham City for example, it was very dark and gritty, but it was true to the Batman TAS they created in the 1990s, and TAS is why I'm a Batman fan.

I love Timm and Dini's Batman too, just as I love Lewis Gilbert's take on Bond (even Moonraker has its good points, though I think the comedy went way over the top with Dolly etc). But Nolan and Mendes are, sad to say, giving audiences what they want. That's been my main argument with FBF in recent years. He thinks we should support "anything but Bond". I think we should specifically promote films that are in that lighter vein. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, JJ Abrams' Star Trek films, even the Pirates of the Caribbean films to a certain extent - there are still movies out there that choose not to go down the tired "dark and gritty" route. I've been toying with whether I should go to see Man of Steel or not. In typing this post, I think I've convinced myself not to!

Save your money Kris. I wouldn't bother.

I'm all for dark and gritty, whereas I know many of you here are not, yet even I was gagging for some light relief, fun and humanity in MoS. Give me Hackman's brilliant, funny one-liners any day of the week over this garbage.

I cannot recall one bit of the Zimmer score either. Williams uplifting score stays with you long afterwards, and is now a classic theme the same way Indy or Star Wars is. This stinking piece of manure has nothing remotely memorable.

I saw all prior 5 films in the theatre so I will compare it to this version. You make it sound like it's comparing NSNA to OP in 1983, which is no contest.

*APPEARS*
HOW IS EVERYONE?????????
I have had months and months of pure HELL. I NEVER forget about you guys and I MISS You all immensely. I miss the discourse and the laughs and the sarcasm. All of it. I have been RIDICULOUSLY busy and just the moment I was about to log on here, and post to hear how everyone is doing... I get an IM telling me "well, we've been talking about you on DCINB" HA!! Telepathy!

So BJ... what did you think??? And also... EXCUSE MY MAN for breaking the all-time box office record for a June debut. I am SO very happy for Henry Cavill and for the amount of LOVE he is getting (because while some, albeit clearly not the majority, might criticize, the vast majority praises his performance), because he deserves ALL of it. And guess what, of course he is gracious and humble and classy in interviews.

I will FOREVER campaign for him as James Bond, period.

Yes I still tweet because THAT is part of what I do for work, too. But I haven't had time for ANYTHING else... and I literally mean anything. So anyway... how have you all been????? Hope everyone is great!!!
(PS there is now a huuuuge number of my female friends and acquaintances campaigning for Henry as Bond. SO THERE. LOL)

I will also amuse you with my dad's reaction every time the Skyfall trailer was on TV last month: "I CANNOT STAND THIS DUDE. He is insufferable, look at that face. And he looks NOTHING like James Bond. I can't stand this promo, every time I see it I feel the need to punch his face instead of rooting for him".   (as you can tell, my father doesn't exactly like Daniel Craig, and mind you I've NEVER talked to him about Craig all that much at all... this is all his own doing.). My mother is of the same exact opinion. I guess it's all about like parents, like daughter. After all, THEY got me into James Bond.
"Are we on coms?"
