Who knows, he may have been earmarked to play Bond years ago. Barbara Broccoli obviously saw something in him, who's to say he wasn't secretly tested while Brosnan was still Bond. It's widely known that the producers test other actors from time to time. We'll just never know.

There was a rumour that Cavill would play Bond in flashbacks with Brosnan playing a present day Bond. Was that seriously considered?

The webmaster of the Dr Shatterhand site sugested that this would happen in Casino Royale. He also said that Daniel Craig would not be cast because he didn't look the part.

Needless to say Dr Shatterhand changed his tune in november 2005.

Saw a recent photo of him, he still looks too soft and too young, even for CR. I just found out he's only 25 today. So did you all want a 23 year old kid to play Bond in CR?

Cavill was in Stardust and I tend to agree that he would have looked too young to be convincing in the lead, though he could have played Bond in the flashback, as suggested, a la River Phoenix in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Of the three actors that were considered to be serious contenders for the role, Sam Worthington strikes me as the best option based on photos, though I have yet to see him in a movie.

Perhaps, but I wouldn't know. I never saw his acting chops. I don't think an Indy style flashback would be good. Keep Bond's pre-MI6 life on the low while giving us little bits of it from time to time. In the films it was never confirmed that Bond's parents were killed in a climbing accident and back that's pretty groundbreaking as far as info on his past life is concerned. I don't think we ever heard a bigger event than that for Bond.

Will you be going to see James Cameron's Avatar, in which Worthington stars, when it comes out next year?

I was referring to Cavill. And no, I'm not interested in Avatar.

I've just seen The Tudors for the first (and probably last) time, and I've changed my mind about Cavill. Based on his performance as Charles Brandon, I actually think that Martin Campbell might have been right after all, and that he could have pulled off a convincing young Bond in CR. More convincing than the 38-year-old "rookie" they actually cast, anyway.

I wonder what's Henry's favorite Bond in terms of an actor playing him?

He's a big fella and he is - naturally - growing older all the time. He looks more like James Bond as time passes.

If he was so close to the role for CR then he must surely have it the bag now unless it was just Martin Campbell rooting for him all along.

I should add that admitting that Campbell may have been onto something wasn't easy for me, given the way I've slagged him off in the past.

I'm replying to this here, as it seems the proper place for this discussion. I suppose you have a point in that he wasn't supposed to have been fresh out of college - though one of the problems I had with CR is that it made the rookie Bond seem so inept that it was hard to believe that he was supposed to have been a Royal Navy commander who had served in the first Gulf War (according to the biography on the official CR website). Perhaps it would have been more believable had he been recruited straight out of school. Of course it would have meant changing James Bond into a completely different character to the one Ian Fleming created, but since when has EON ever worried about that?

I'm hoping and would imagine it will be quite likely that in the future Henry Cavill will slip into the tux.
As he came so close to winning the role in 2005, but as has been discussed, his age at the time was an issue.
When Craigs time comes to hang up the shoulder holster, I'm hoping EON give Mr. Cavill a call.
He certainly has a good Bondian look.

I tend to lean towards Cavill as the next James Bond now. Sam Worthington has been in some big films lately but his stock doesn't seem to have risen and no one appeared to single him out. I prefer Cavill who - while not Marlon Brando - has a bit of edge to him in The Tudors and most importantly has the classic Bondian look that Cubby would have gone for.
