Liam Neeson: 'I turned down James Bond'

Liam Neeson: 'I turned down James Bond to marry Natasha Richardson'

Liam Neeson has revealed he turned down the role of James Bond on the instruction of his late wife.

The actor was approached to play the famous spy but turned it down, after Natasha Richardson threatened not to marry him. The pair were married for 15 years before Richardson tragically died in a skiing accident in March 2009.

In a recent interview with the Hull Daily Mail, Neeson spoke about the Bond role proposal, saying: "I was heavily courted, let's put it that way, and I'm sure some other actors were too.

"It was about 18 or 19 years ago and my wife-to-be said, 'If you play James Bond we're not getting married'. And I had to take that on board because I did want to marry her."

The 61-year-old recently discussed his wife's death saying it still doesn't feel "real".

The couple had two children together, to which Neeson added: "There's periods now in our New York residence when I hear the door opening, especially the first couple of years... anytime I hear that door opening, I still think I'm going to hear her."

"It hits you. It's like a wave. You just get this profound feeling of instability. The Earth isn't stable anymore and then it passes and it becomes more infrequent, but I still get it sometimes."

I'm thinking he would have been like Dalton. Taken meets Bond.

I think he would have been good now I've seen him in Taken. He was also considered for Bond for one of Kevin McClory's madcap rebel Bond projects.

I'm not sure. The action star him of now is very different from the struggling actor him of the 1990s.

It shows some of the prejudice the 007 movies receive from some in the entertainment community.

As I was reading this I wondered if it was EON he was talking about since his name came up when the other series was attempted. Althou it does sound like EON, given how many actors say they were approached or signed. Like bloody Dougray bloody Scott. (Suppose Pierce cost you the role of Wolverine as well you git!)

It was Mission: Impossible 2 that caused Scott to drop out of X Men. I would not have objected to Scott taking over in 2002, but only if James Purefoy was unavailable.

He hates that actor for whatever reason.

I like him in the first Taken. But he seems way too big to be Bond. Sort of like the Rock-size.

Surely, your joking, DT! (don't call me Shirley  ). Bond (imo) shouldn't be a huge bulky guy. Connery was at the maximum size, and he looked best when he was drinking slimfast; the chunkier and chunkier he might have been, after DAF. I can't see the Liam as Bond, isn't he something like 6-4 or more? Bond in the books is 6 feet, and slim. The most 'believable physique belonged to the Brosnan, he was also closest to the Fleming Bond. If there is no limit to 007's size and an actor the size of the Rock can step into his shoes, it sort of takes away some of the charm. 1. then Bond would have to fight guys 7-2 and weighing 380 pounds all the time. It would start to look like pro wrassling. This size Bond would've dwarfed Oddjob, and then we wouldn't have felt any menace.

To sum up, Bond should be on the medium side in weight, and without bulging biceps and sausage suits splitting at the seams.

Can anyone find an actor in the 70's/80's/90's who was not approached to play Bond?
