Sources close to Activision have said that the publisher is working on a remake of the Nintendo64 hit James Bond game Goldeneye.
The new title may be a remake of the classic Nintendo 64 first-person shooter, originally developed by Rare, and according to our source the publisher intends to unveil it at E3.
Development duties have been split between UK-based Eurocom and US-based n-Space.
Eurocom has previously worked on James Bond titles during the franchise's time at E3, including the N64 title The World Is Not Enough.
Earlier this week, Activision had put up an online survey questioning gamers whether they might be interested in a remake and some time ago already several domains referring to Goldeneye have been registered by the publisher, suggesting that the rumours may very well be true.
Activision hasn't commented yet, but expectations are that we'll see an announcement at E3. Also the platforms have been rumoured already: Wii and DS.

Games news: Activision GoldenEye remake leaked?
More rumours have emerged suggesting that Activision are working on a new GoldenEye game for the Wii and DS, although Rare have already denied any involvement.
Last week some pretty unconvincing looking images emerged, that many assumed were fan-made fakes. Supposedly part of a customer survey from Activision, they showed some Wii box art, a James Bond themed lightgun holder and a gold Classic Controller Pro.
Previous to this Activision had been caught registering the website goldeneyegame.com, while what purported to be a leaked release schedule from GAME also listed a new GoldenEye title.
The images feature Daniel Craig as James Bond, instead of Pierce Brosnan, with some attached blurb talking about a "re-imagined" version of the 13 year old Nintendo 64 game and a "modernised version of the classic story".
Also promised is an old school four-player split screen mode and an eight-player online option.
The original Nintendo 64 game, for those that weren't around at the time, was not just a great James Bond game but a seminal first person shooter. Long before Halo it was the first critically and commercially successful game of its type on a console and sold over 8 million copies.
However, its complex development history has made any remake or re-release so far impossible. Not only do original publisher Nintendo no longer own the rights to the Bond license but developer Rare are now owned by Microsoft.
An Xbox Live Arcade remake was started but Microsoft and Nintendo couldn't agree on terms and it was canned. (A remake of spiritual sequel Perfect Dark did go ahead though.)
Rare have denied any involvement in this new project but that's probably not a great loss as most of the team involved with the original long ago left Rare to form Free Radical Design, now Crytek UK.
Instead, developer Eurocom is believed to be working on the game, with an expected November release date. Eurocom created the The World Is Not Enough tie-in and original title James Bond 007: NightFire (as well as James Bond Jr. for the SNES). Geist developer n-Space are also believed to be involved.
This wouldn't be the first time another publisher has tried to cash-in on the success of the original game either, with Electronic Arts releasing the shamefully rubbish, but largely unconnected, GoldenEye: Rogue Agent in 2004.
Let's hope this new game, if it really does exist, is better.

Re: Activision doing Goldeneye remake?
That is just wrong. Goldeneye was one of the great games in gaming history, to pervert it is a just wrong. There was a rumor back when Iwas playing GoldenEye that there was a cheat code which would allow you to play as any of the Bonds in verses mode. Turned out it never happened because of licensing issues maybe. Now if they want to add Craig in as one of 6 bonds in VS mode i'm fine with that but for game play it Pierce Brosnan's movie so he should be the primary Bond.
Licensing has bene a probelm for Goldeneye since the start there was one game I remember that supposedly was a built on Goldeneye and had similar play I can't remember the name of it for anything right now

Re: Activision doing Goldeneye remake?
All of the cover art I've seen looks like bad fan knockoffs. I don't see why they would add Craig's image to when they will not do it for a new games coming out later this year. If they do replace the original character the loyal following will be upset, this game has a place in a lot of peoples hearts, updating it is one thing, replacing the characters with others may be a step too far many. They need to kept the game to original's formula update it for HD like they do a lot of retro games, do that and it is a guaranteed hit screw with that and it may be as well received as the last GoldenEye game (GoldenEye: Rogue Agent, 2004).
Perfect Dark is the game that was an enhanced version of GoldenEye 007's. Xbox Live had a updated HD version available for dowload.

Re: Activision doing Goldeneye remake?
The reaction so far is negative not so much about Craig as it is about them altering classic and using Craig (if true) signifies that it this new game is not a true version of GoldenEye. Already expert predictions of underwhelming sales and from the various game forums it seems people are upset this is not a direct port of the old game.

It's been a civil war the moment from they cast Craig. The Bond world is fighting amongst itself tearing itself to pieces all over going with a unBond actor to make unBond movies in an unBond direction with unBond themes. All of it was supposed to be in the name of imitating what is popular even that is wrong because itis if off the mark there as well. What it boils down to is the Bond makers didn't want to make James Bond movies any more but nobody would pay to see the movies they do want to make without the Bond name.FormerBondFan wrote:More like a Bond civil war if you ask me.Kristatos wrote:It wouldn't surprise me. While I have no problem replacing an actor with a better one, I don't see the point in remaking GE whether with Brosnan or not. Just make an original Bond game with Craig and no harm will be done.

Better actor my ass, if you'll pardon the french. I agree about a new game I'm fine with that, but Goldeneye is something special if you had experienced it you'd know why. All the new game is is a bastardization of a icon. Besides it is Pierces Bond the game already exists. This is a stupid meaningless gesture by nintendo to cash in on the name of one of the best games ever made. The travesty is they are not even using the original game probably because thye cant they claim they are rewriting it but with out the consent of the original programers, lame because a Goldeney for xbox wii ps3 is a long awaited even band this isn't it. Nothing to do with for or against Craig just the stupid SOBs at Nintendo!

Re: Activision doing Goldeneye remake?
What makes this a issue is the game is a RETRO game. If it were a new game then I don't think anyone would care who is in it but the only new game coming out does not feature Craig and placing him in GoldenEye 007 is a sore point for gamers. Nintendo is counting on the people who buy Wiis by the tens millions being too stupid to notice.

Re: Activision doing Goldeneye remake?
I must say that if they had to make a Bond game with Daniel Craigs likeness (which I have no problem with), why didn't they just make an independent game, that isn't based on one of the films?
Similar to Pierce in Everything or Nothing. Which I felt was as good as the original GoldenEye N64.
Makes no sense to have Craig in GoldenEye.

Re: Activision doing Goldeneye remake?
It all licensing BS. It's costing them to use Craig's image for no discernible benefit, possibly the worst miss step of Nintendo this generation. GoldenEye is a valuable name in the game industry, it's been misused once before and now this rendition will probably get the disdain of the nostalgia generation it is aimed at.
I bet if you get Craig aside for quiet word man to man he probably feels like s**t because of this and isn't happy about it at all. He can't say anything publicly because of his contracts, but I doubt we'll see him out flogging this abomination.

Re: Activision doing Goldeneye remake?
True. Craig is known be be an avid gamer so I wonder what he really thinks of this. I guess it is licensing. Rare could not afford to get the likeness of Connery, Moore and Dalton when they planned on adding them as bonus cheats. That would have been really awesome.Mazer Rackham wrote:It all licensing BS. Overall I agree with Nash, it should have been an independent adventure for Craig instead of looking back to GE. Look how the trailer promotes it as a "GoldenEye game" rather than a "Bond game", I wish Activision didn't stoop to this level. Bond games really need to break away from the GE mold.
GE is a great game, but not really a true Bond game. A greater and more appropriate inspiration would be the Metal Gear Solid games, for a decade they have been what I consider the true James Bond games. Less shooting targets and more spying please.

Re: Activision doing Goldeneye remake?
Activision and Nintendo do not know where they want to take this game. Is it a game of the movie or a remake of the original.. My guess is they really give a d**n as long as it sells. So far it seems sales may disappoint them since nobody is enthusiastic about this game. It has the strong taint of deliberate exploitation, a major turn off for casual buyers. There are some Bond fans who will feel compelled to buy it because they buy everything Bond, for god's sake people draw the bloody line somewhere!
Looking at the talent involved they are all shameless. Arnold, Craig's stunt double, bas***ds cashing in. I did not have a bad opinion of them on a personal level until now. I can not see how they become involved in this in good conscience.
Danny boy and Dench may have contracts that obligating them to take part, although they could have lifted M's voice from the movies, possibly Craig's as well. But Activision is bragging about new voice sessions.
Personally I don't think Craig is happy about it for several reason. One being if he did indeed record a new voice for it then as far as I am aware he hasn't been out there bragging about it /talking it up. We know he loves video games on a personal level and this would be a big deal for him.
Another reason is this kind of cheap shot and bastardization of a classic Brozza movie/game reinforces a negative image he has in the business. Look no further than Hugh Jackman's opinions on Craig and the reasons for them. I don't think Craig was aware he was getting that kind of rep until he was adopted by Babs. After having "made it", personal comments from other actors helped him understand he was coming off as a bit of a schmuck. I think he has done a lot to clean that up and this would be a backwards step from his prospective.
Now... if all of that if being overly generous and he in fact sought this out, then this is without question the dirtiest money he ever took and he is a soulless whore who should get out of the business!
