Craig only good for one movie?
Casino Royale was a radical departure for the Bond franchise. It had an actor who did not look like Bond playing a different Bond character. The movie was distinctive because it was an origin story. Casino Royale was a hit. This "young Bond" film with James Bond played by Daniel Craig was seen as fresh and a change from the usual Bond (although not by me).
Eon tried to replicate this new winning formula in Quantum of Solace. In Solace, Craig was still playing the dour, inexperienced tough Bond, and the film was dark and missing many Bond motifs. This time round, critics panned the film and called for the return of the traditional Bond movie and character.
I think that Daniel Craig as Bond and the new style is an idea that only lasted for one film. Audienced expected the old style Bond to return after the origin film. I also think they will want the old style Bond back too - which is not good news for Daniel Craig.

As I have said, I hope that EON was paying attention to the bad reviews QOS and they come up with something better.I suspect that won't be the case. The Broccowilsons attempt at trying to repair the damage will just make things worse.

Why is Quantum of Solace listed as one of your favourite Bond films and why did you give it a good review?katied wrote:As I have said, I hope that EON was paying attention to the bad reviews QOS and they come up with something better.I suspect that won't be the case. The Broccowilsons attempt at trying to repair the damage will just make things worse.
Re: Craig only good for one movie?
Not good, just so-so.
I pointed out its many flaws.
I didn't like it enough that I'm going to buy it on DVD(which is a discussion for another thread )

Presumably you hate most of the Bond films, if Quantum of Solace is in your top four?katied wrote:Not good, just so-so.

Re: Craig only good for one movie?
No, I don't. There are certain Bond films I would rather watch than others is all.
[digression] I hate it when I'm made to feel less of a fan because I don't like certain films in a genre-take the Bond films as an example. It's endemic to all sorts of fandoms, I've seen it with music groups- "I'm a better fan because I have more crapabilia and have liked the band longer than you have". And between some of the music groups I have liked and Bond fans, I have had more than enough of that to last me a lifetime [/digression]
(It's not all Bond fans.just the ones who look down their noses at others...that only minimally applies to DCINB )

I agree with your thesis Gary. If Craig returns in a normal Bond movie, he may be seen as an unwanted hangover from the rebooted Bond era.Gary Seven wrote:Casino Royale was a radical departure for the Bond franchise. Katie: you spend hours every day attacking Daniel Craig and Quantum of Solace on this forum - you spent months posting "the pro-Craigs won't like that" 200 times every day. Then you include Quantum of Solace amongst your favourite Bond movies. That does not make any sense.
If I included Casino Royale in my list of top four Bond movies, other posters would think it was strange.

Probably right.A regular Bond movie with him would be out of place.Capt. Sir Dominic Flandry wrote:I agree with your thesis Gary. Re: Craig only good for one movie?
This whole argument would make sense, if most people actually didn't still praise Craig in the role or CR. Most of the heat went onto the film itself, not the actor.
Re: Craig only good for one movie?
I think things have changed over the past few months. I might not agree with (most) of the pro-Craigs but they're entitled to their opinion.
It's the people that try and tell me I'm a bad fan because I'm not buying QOS on DVD-or any other "essential"- yeah right-Bond DVD that annoy me

What about those who call you a bad fan for putting it in your favorites?

Yeah, I can see that. Whatever. They're entitled to their opinion. I'm thick skinned, moreso than I was elsewhere. funny how that works!

Re: Craig only good for one movie?
I actually see CR and QoS as 2 very different films. It's no secret that I was a big fan of CR, but not a big fan of QoS. EON didn't try to replicate the CR formula in QoS. The style went into a totally different direction, one of the reasons why it has been panned so much by critics. CR was a winning formula, QoS was not.Gary Seven wrote:Casino Royale was a radical departure for the Bond franchise. It had an actor who did not look like Bond playing a different Bond character. CR was the longest running time film in Bond history. QoS was the shortest. It scrapped the very good action scenes in CR and instead brought us badly edited action scenes in the Bourne style for QoS. The plot relied heavily on a Fleming novel in CR. In QoS, the plot at times was non-existent. For such a short film, there were waaay too many action scenes crammed into it, and Bond lost his vulnerability that was cleverly done in CR. We felt Bond was in pain in CR, whereas in QoS, he became superman, straying back into Brosnan territory again (especially with that crappy free-fall scene).
So I understand why critics loved CR, yet panned QoS - I'm one of them!

I did not call anyone a "bad fan" for putting QOS in their favourites. I merely stated that it is eccentric that someone attacks Craig and QOS on a daily basis, but states that QOS is one of their favourite Bonds.stockslivevan wrote:What about those who call you a bad fan for putting it in your favorites?
Does The Sweeney have Die Another Day listed as one of his favourite Bond movies? No he does not.

I wasn't referring to you And I can see why it's in your words "eccentric".

Re: Craig only good for one movie?
Most of my friends loved Casino Royale and hated Quantum of Solace. They loved the origin story but do now think Craig can be a grown up Bond like Connery or Brosnan. A new James Bond should be cast to bring the old Bond back, the grown up Bond with the humor, gadgets, women, fun stunts.
Re: Craig only good for one movie?
Heh.I love that we're getting lots of new people that are coming around to seeing our side of things Unfortunately,we're still in a minority when it comes to getting rid of Craig, (And I myself don't necessarily think they're going to fire him just because of a few bad reviews.)
