Re: The BJMDDS General Discussion Thread......

Have you heard this John Barry tune before? It was originally composed by Barry for a 1967 Sunsilk Shampoo Ad.

Great tune and sounds very much like Barry.

Re: The BJMDDS General Discussion Thread......

I agree that in one of the photos in that clothes commercial DC looks sort of like Iggy Pop.

I like Iggy Pop though and he did a great cover of WHATTITW on the David Arnold cd of Barry covers.

Re: The BJMDDS General Discussion Thread......

We knew about the language problems in YOLT of course and that they switched the roles for Mie and Akiko. They both look cute but Akiko looks perhaps a bit more "Japanese" so to speak. Maybe that's why she was first cast as the Ama girl. But it works either way. Many girls in the Bond series were ...

Re: The BJMDDS General Discussion Thread......

Regarding the villains in Fleming's books vs how they wrere portrayed in the films,

I think Dr No was very good and sort of how Fleming described him, although not as tall and with metal hands rather than hooks, but certainly not a completely different character.

Rosa Klebb was more revolting in ...

Re: The BJMDDS General Discussion Thread......

I suppose you have to take into account that there was no home video back then, and big blockbuster movies didn't get shown on TV for about 10 years after their release. I guess they figured enough time had passed for the audience not to think about his previous role (though IIRC, they wanted ...

Re: The BJMDDS General Discussion Thread......

Raymond Benson in his book The James Bond Bedside Companion thinks that Savalas as Blofeld was "too snide, more like a New York gangster".

Edit: In the poll I set up 11 years (!) ago Donald P was the most popular Blofeld. :D

Re: The BJMDDS General Discussion Thread......

Regarding other actors who came back to the series as a different character,

George Baker was the real Hilary Bray in OHMSS and came back as Captain Benson, one of the naval officers Bond meets at the submarine base, in Spy.

Robert Brown was also in Spy in the same scene at the submarine base, as ...

Charles Gray was also Henderson in YOLT as you know.

Weird that he returned to the series as Blofeld.

Re: The BJMDDS General Discussion Thread......

By YOLT, Blofeld felt like a different man altogether,

I agree, the faceless Blofelds i FRWL and TB were by far the best.

I don't think a similar serious Blofeld would've worked i YOLT though since the movie was so over the top.

The mad scientist type Blofeld was actually quite fitting for ...

Would be terrible if everything was AI.

However this is just a few covers made for fun by some regular guys, no big deal.

I watch this forum with a desktop computer, I often get a General Error page when I want to check a new page, I then refresh and get to the page I want. A bit annoying, the site is not completely healthy it seems.

Re: The BJMDDS General Discussion Thread......

Count Lippe: nice observations about Hitchcock potentially not being the right guy to have directed Bond films.

And I’m in full agreement with DR NO being superior to the novel. I think GF is also improved in the film version.

The plot to make the gold radioactive, rather than to steal all of ...

Re: The BJMDDS General Discussion Thread......

Regarding Fleming, did he really say "f*** up" to Terende Young, not very sophisticated in that case.

I also don't think Hitchcock would have been the right choice for a Bond movie. Hitchcock preferred to make films in studios, he probably wouldn't have liked to travel to a lot of exotic places ...

Not much John Barry in the John Barry Thread I'm afraid.

Re: John Barry Thread

I think that in this age of endless reboots and cinematic multiverses, audiences will be able to grasp that the next Bond film will not follow on directly from NTTD, just as they understood that Joaquin Phoenix's Joker was not Jared Leto's Joker or Heath Ledger's Joker.

I'm not familiar with ...

Re: John Barry Thread

NSNA wasn't a real Bond film though, so it's not comparable, it wasn't made by EON and they couldn't use the Bond theme, and so on.

But I'm sure the regular audience saw DC as just a continuation of the series, not a separate timeline. For them it will be like Bond rises from the grave if they're ...
